Video-sharing platform YouTube is running a limited test, bringing a new feature to a small group of YouTube Premium subscribers.
With the new feature, this group of users will be able to share ad-free video viewing links with friends who have not yet signed up for the service.
According to technology experts, this could be an effort by Google technology corporation to improve the content sharing experience and could be a way to introduce the benefits of the YouTube Premium service package.
YouTube ads are a controversial topic. Some users are willing to pay for Premium for the full experience, while others are not interested in it. With a new experimental feature, Premium users can share uninterrupted video viewing moments with family and friends.
According to Android Police, Premium users who are participating in the test will see an additional "Share ad-free" option appear next to the "Share" button when watching videos. Each Premium user participating in the test can create up to 10 ad-free sharing links per month. Each shared link can be viewed ad-free by friends (who do not have Premium) up to 10 times. After that, the video will display ads as usual to that viewer.
The system will automatically detect if the link recipient is a Premium subscriber and their views will not count towards the sender's limit of 10 views/link or 10 links/month.
But this is a small, geographically limited test. The feature is currently only available in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Türkiye, and the United Kingdom. A small number of Premium users in these countries are being selected to test it and provide feedback.
Currently, YouTube has not announced official information about plans to expand testing or widely deploy this feature in the future.
According to some analysts, this could be a way for Premium users to spread the ad-free YouTube viewing experience and encourage relatives and friends to consider upgrading their accounts./.
