Farmers in the Mekong Delta are entering the main harvest season, with expectations of a bumper crop and stable rice prices.
With more than 70,000 hectares of summer-autumn rice, focusing on aromatic, specialty, high-quality rice varieties to serve domestic and export needs. This year's summer-autumn crop encountered unfavorable weather from the beginning of the crop, but thanks to proactive water resources and pest control, the 2024 summer-autumn rice crops in Can Tho developed well, the harvested rice areas had high yields, selling prices from 7,200 VND/kg to 7,500 VND/kg, after deducting all costs, people made a profit of 30 to 40 million/ha.
Ms. Lam Thi Chin, a rice farmer in Dong Binh commune, Thoi Lai district, Can Tho city, said that her family's nearly 3 hectares of summer-autumn rice had just been harvested, with a yield of 700 - 800 kg/acre. The price of rice purchased by traders at the field for IR 50404 variety is 7,200 VND/kg; OM 5451 variety is 7,500 - 7,700 VND/kg; and OM 18 and Dai Thom 8 varieties are 7,800 - 7,900 VND/kg.
According to Ms. Chin, this price increased by an average of about 1,000 VND/kg compared to the same period last year. After deducting costs, farmers still made a profit of about 30 million VND/ha, a fairly good profit for the summer-autumn rice crop.
Having just finished harvesting 1 hectare of Dai Thom 8 rice, farmer Phan Van Cau, Tan Thanh commune, Thoi Lai district shared that the selling price at the field is 7,600 VND/kg, which is considered a good price up to this point, with the above price after deducting all costs, there is still a profit of nearly 3.5 million/cong.
“Recently, the price outside was 7,600 VND/kg, calculating the profit of one hectare, it was more than 3 million. Our farmers are very excited about that price, working with the experience of farmers who started to sow sparsely, the productivity is high, the cost is low, the profit is much higher than before. I am also very happy, calculating that I get a lot of profit,” said Mr. Cau.
Mr. Tran Thai Nghiem - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Can Tho City informed that up to now, the city's harvested rice area is more than 6,500 hectares, the rice yield is estimated at 6 tons/ha, the selling price is from 7,200 VND/kg to 7,500 VND/kg. To harvest summer-autumn rice smoothly, localities and cooperatives need to cooperate with enterprises in purchasing and consuming rice, ensuring the interests between farmers and enterprises.
“The summer-autumn crop is starting its harvest period, and it is expected that the concentrated harvest will be in the second half of June. The consumption linkage situation for Can Tho City every year is that the winter-spring crop is the crop with relatively good consumption linkage with an area of over 30,000 hectares, while the remaining crops are linked through the system of traders, businesses, and traders in the localities with relatively smaller areas, falling between 15,000 and 20,000 hectares,” said Mr. Nghiem.
According to the Vietnamese agricultural sector, in the first 5 months of 2024, the country exported nearly 4.03 million tons of rice, earning 2.56 billion USD. The average export price of rice in the first 5 months of this year reached 638 USD/ton, up 20.5% over the same period last year. In the past 5 months, rice exports to most major markets have grown positively. In particular, the Philippines and Indonesia are the two largest customers of Vietnamese rice in Southeast Asia.
