From the night of September 22 to September 23, heavy rains caused a row of houses of 24 fishing households with 267 people in Tien Phong village, Quang Vinh commune (Duc Tho district, Ha Tinh) to be flooded. However, the lives of the people here were not much disrupted.
Tien Phong fishing village is located in Eo Bu bay, a branch of Lam river. People make a living by fishing. Decades ago, they lived on the river, living and eating on boats.
In November 2021, Ha Tinh province surveyed and arranged a 1.5-hectare land plot in Tien Phong village and coordinated with businesses and benefactors to build 24 houses with a total cost of more than 9 billion VND for the people of Van Hoi fishing village. In early 2023, the row of houses was completed and handed over to the people, making their dream of settling down on land come true.
24 houses are designed in a 2-storey flood shelter style, over 110m2 wide. The first floor is only used for pillars, no surrounding walls, and is used to store vehicles, equipment, and production tools.
The second floor is surrounded by a wall, inside there is a 30m2 living room, two bedrooms of nearly 30m2, a kitchen and a bathroom.
In front of the second floor door, people can do activities and spread out mats to rest. During the rainy season like these last days of September, they "live with the flood".
Truong Thi Nhat (41 years old, living in Tien Phong village) and her husband have 5 children. Before, the family lived huddled under a boat surrounded by corrugated iron and covered with tarpaulin. Every time there was a flood, the couple would anchor the boat and leave their children at the home of relatives and neighbors. After the flood, they would get back on the boat and make a living.
"Life was hard all year round, just dreaming of having enough to eat, and our children's education was not going well. But now, our lives have changed, we have a stable house to live in, and we can adapt to the rainy season," said Ms. Nhat.
When the flood comes, people in the fishing village will put their motorbikes and bicycles on the stairs and cover them with tarpaulins to protect them from damage.
Chickens, ducks, dogs and cats are usually raised on the first floor. During the rainy season, they will raise the cages high and fix them to the house pillars.
During the rainy and flood days, children in Tien Phong fishing village will be given a day off from school and will study at home to ensure safety.
During the flood season, the local government has always paid attention to the lives of people in Tien Phong fishing village, Quang Vinh commune.
