37 pumping stations are degraded

The Chuoi village pumping station in Le Loi commune has seriously degraded. Mr. Pham Gia Vu, Director of the Le Loi Commune Agricultural Service Cooperative, said that the station was built 40 years ago, serving to irrigate 28 hectares of agricultural land in the village. This pumping station was built a long time ago, the pump house is only a dozen square meters, the walls are old, peeling in many places; the fibro cement roof is broken in some places, the bamboo bars supporting the roof can break at any time.

Because it often leaks when it rains, the pump operator has to cover the main part of the machine with a wooden board. The body of the machine has not been replaced for a long time and is rusty. The electric wires in the pumping station are tangled, posing a high risk of safety, especially when it rains.

Mr. Doan Duy Bat, the person in charge of the Chuoi village pumping station, shared: "Because I don't have a separate house to look after the pump, every time I operate it, I have to sit outside to watch it. Sitting inside is very noisy, unbearable."

The person in charge of the Chuoi village pumping station had to use a wooden board to cover the machine to prevent rainwater from falling in.

The pumping station in Luong Nham village (Yết Kiêu commune) is not doing much better. According to Mr. Doan Van Thoại, the person in charge of the Luong Nham pumping station, storm No. 3 collapsed the tiled roof of the station, so the tiles had to be replaced. The pumps have been broken for a long time and often break down and need to be repaired. “Whatever breaks down, we replace it, it is not synchronized, so when we replace one thing, another breaks down. The machines are not good, so operation is very difficult. Before pumping water, we always have to check the machines again,” Thoại assessed.

When we arrived, the door of the station was rusty, the inside was shabby, there was nothing but a pump.

Gia Loc District has 51 pumping stations managed by the District People's Committee, which are responsible for receiving water from the main canal system, main pumping stations, bringing irrigation water to the fields and draining water from the fields to the canals. 37 pumping stations have degraded and need to be rebuilt or repaired. Most of the pumping stations were built in the 80s of the last century, with some pumping stations built in the 1960s and 1970s.

Over time of exploitation and operation, most of the pumping stations have degraded, the pumping station house is small, the roof is leaking, the pumps are old, broken, and have poor efficiency. The power supply system is degraded, causing unsafety during operation. The channel, suction tank, and discharge tank of the pumping station are pushed, dropped, and silted, unable to meet the task. Most of the pumping stations do not have a manager.

In the past, repairs were only carried out on a small scale such as repairing broken pumps, replacing pump parts, welding and patching broken faucets... These activities were only temporary in nature to maintain the operation of the pumping station.

The pump of Luong Nham village pumping station (Yet Kieu commune) is rusty and old.

The dilapidated pumping station makes it difficult for the pump station operators when the crop season comes. According to Mr. Doan Van Tam, Deputy Director of Yet Kieu Agricultural Service Cooperative, once the pumping station in Luong Nham village broke down, while the repair was difficult because the equipment was not synchronized and had to wait to be brought from elsewhere. To have water for production, the cooperative had to borrow field machines from local people to pump water. “Every time the machine broke down, we felt inconvenienced and worried. If this situation continued, it would affect the agricultural production of the people,” said Mr. Tam.

Having also had to find people to repair and replace equipment during the crop season for farmers, Mr. Le Xuan Minh, Director of Phuong Hung Cooperative (Gia Loc town) said: "In 2023, the Cua Hang pumping station in Phuong Khe village broke down and had to stop pumping water for 2 days for repairs. We ran around looking for people to repair it in time to pump water, but we couldn't do it right away because we had to wait for equipment."

The system of tanks, suction channels... at many pumping stations are silted, damaged, and not repaired synchronously.

Agricultural production is still the main source of income for Gia Loc farmers, especially winter crops with high economic value. The pumping station system here needs to be invested in promptly and synchronously to help people irrigate their crops conveniently.
