On the evening of October 25, the first team to qualify for the 2025 AFC U17 Championship finals was determined. Surprisingly, it was not South Korea or Japan but North Korea who achieved this impressive achievement. North Korea was in Group A with host Jordan, Hong Kong (China), Syria and Iran.
This is considered a very difficult group when Jordan and Syria are among the top 2 teams in Asia, Iran regularly wins tickets to the World Cup, only Hong Kong (China) is considered the "underdog". However, North Korea has won all 12 points after the first 4 matches. On the opening day, North Korea won 8-2 against Hong Kong (China) with an explosive performance.
North Korea U17 won a ticket to the 2025 AFC U17 Championship.
In the match against Syria, North Korea encountered many difficulties but Kim Yu-jin's late goal still brought 3 points for the whole team. In the most important match against Iran, North Korea proved its "destructive" power with a 4-1 victory. Iran's honorable equalizer only came in the 90+4 minute, when the match was already decided. In the end, North Korea beat host Jordan 3-0 and won 12 full points.
In other groups, Afghanistan is leading Group B with 9 points. South Korea and China both have 9 points in Group C and will meet in the final round. Thailand and India have 6 points and will also meet in the final round of Group D. Iraq and Uzbekistan will compete for the top spot in Group E.
For U17 Vietnam, the 2-0 victory opens up a great opportunity for coach Cristiano Roland and his team to continue. They will meet Yemen in the final match and need 3 points to top the group. If they draw or lose, the risk of U17 Vietnam being eliminated is very high despite finishing second in the group.
In Group H, Lebanon withdrew from the tournament at the last minute. According to AFC regulations, the 10 group winners and the 5 best second-placed teams will qualify for the 2025 AFC U17 Championship. Therefore, when considering the second-placed teams' results, the results of the 4th and 5th-placed teams in each group will be discarded. Vietnam U17 temporarily ranked 6th in the list of 10 second-placed teams with 1 point and a goal difference of 0.
