Quang Nham commune develops marine economy

Located along a coastline of more than 7km, Quang Nham commune (Quang Xuong) has long been known as a land rich in fishing traditions. With favorable natural conditions, abundant seafood resources and the diligence and creativity of the people, Quang Nham is growing strongly, becoming a bright spot in the development of the marine economy.

The marine economy has long been the main source of livelihood for the people of Quang Nham. The fishing villages here soon formed small fishing communities, relying on human power and simple boats. But over time, with changes in economic thinking and support from the State's development policies, the seafood fishing industry in Quang Nham has changed dramatically. People not only rely on manual exploitation but also invest in large-capacity fishing vessels and modern equipment, helping to increase productivity and reduce risks when going to sea.

Modernization in the fishing industry does not stop at offshore fishing trips. Quang Nham Commune also pays special attention to building an infrastructure system to serve fishing logistics. From fishing ports, wharves to cold storage and processing plants, every step is systematically organized to increase the value of seafood. Seafood such as shrimp, fish, and squid are not only consumed domestically but also reach out to the international market, bringing a stable source of income to hundreds of households.

In addition to fishing, aquaculture is also a highlight in the economic development of the commune. Shrimp farming fields stretching out, using advanced technology, are gradually changing the face of the rural economy. Many households have shifted from small-scale production to large-scale farming models, applying high technology to control the water environment, limit diseases and increase productivity. For example, Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh's family in Tan village used to raise shrimp using traditional methods with a pond area of ​​less than 1 hectare. However, after participating in technical training courses organized by the commune and receiving support from the Social Policy Bank, Mr. Thanh boldly expanded the pond area to 3 hectares. His family also invested in an aeration system, water treatment, used high-quality shrimp breeds and applied a biotechnology shrimp farming model. Currently, he harvests dozens of tons of shrimp each year, earning a revenue of more than 2 billion VND, after deducting expenses, making a profit of hundreds of millions of VND. These models not only ensure a stable source of income but also create jobs for local workers, especially women and the elderly.

Not only focusing on exploitation and farming, Quang Nham also develops accompanying services such as processing, transportation and sea tourism. Some households have boldly changed their business direction, opening homestay services and restaurants to serve tourists who want to experience fishing village life. By promoting its unique sea culture, the commune is gradually creating a unique mark on the tourism map of Thanh Hoa province.

Currently, the entire Quang Nham commune has 467 seafood exploitation vessels, with a total capacity of 47,000CV, with 392 offshore fishing vessels. In the first 10 months of 2024, the exploitation output reached 10,500 tons, creating jobs for more than 2,500 workers. In addition, the commune also has nearly 55 enterprises, seafood production and processing facilities with an annual processing output of over 10,000 tons. Products such as dried fish, dried mussels, fish sauce... have conquered the market in and outside the province.

However, the journey of developing the marine economy in Quang Nham has not always been smooth sailing. Local people still face many challenges, from natural disasters, climate change to fierce competition in the market. Annual natural disasters not only cause property damage but also directly threaten people's livelihoods. To overcome difficulties, local authorities have increased coordination with specialized agencies, organized training, improved skills for fishermen and supported loans so that they can confidently stay at sea.

Mr. Tran Van Long, Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, said: We clearly identify that, in order to develop a sustainable marine economy, it is necessary to effectively resolve the current difficulties of the people. The commune is focusing on implementing practical support solutions such as: upgrading fishing vessels, especially those with large capacity of 200CV or more to expand the scope of offshore fishing; providing high-quality aquatic breeds and organizing specialized training courses on fishing and farming techniques. Along with that, the application of modern science and technology in post-harvest exploitation and preservation is being promoted by investing in a system of storage tunnels, helping to maintain the quality of products when returning to shore, thereby improving the quality of raw materials for the seafood processing industry. At the same time, the commune is making efforts to attract businesses to invest in purchasing and processing aquatic and seafood products, forming a closed value chain from exploitation, farming to processing and consumption. The locality has identified aquatic and seafood exploitation, farming and processing as a key economic sector, with the goal of reaching an output of 55,000 tons by 2025, accounting for 47% of the commune's economic structure.
