WHO says at least a quarter of people injured in war have serious, life-changing injuries.
On Wednesday, WHO and its partners evacuated 97 critically ill and injured patients from Gaza to Abu Dhabi for specialized treatment. This is the largest evacuation from Gaza since October 2023, according to Rik Peeperkorn, WHO representative in the Palestinian territories.
These patients suffered from diseases such as cancer, severe trauma and other health problems. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised the success of “a very complex operation” despite many difficulties and dangers.
The patient and 155 of his companions were transferred from four different locations in Gaza to a central hospital before being flown to Abu Dhabi. The evacuation was particularly difficult for patients in northern Gaza, which is difficult to reach.
WHO said at least a quarter of those injured as of July had suffered serious injuries, many requiring amputations and requiring years of rehabilitation.
WHO estimates that there were between 13,455 and 17,550 cases of severe injuries to the arms or legs, of which between 3,105 and 4,050 required amputation.
Peeperkorn warned that “many patients are unable to receive the care they need” due to severe disruptions to health services in Gaza. Only 17 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are partially operational, and basic health services are often disrupted or inaccessible.
