Monitoring measles prevention and control in Bac Ha district

On April 9, the working group of the Provincial Center for Disease Control organized a monitoring of measles prevention and control work in Bac Ha district.

Working with the Health Stations of Ta Van Chu and Ban Pho communes, the working group supervised the work of advising on direction, monitoring disease cases and implementing vaccination. Here, the working group highly appreciated the direction of the local government on disease prevention and control through the issued document system; especially appreciated the implementation of the measles vaccination campaign and the work of monitoring and propagating disease prevention and control. However, the storage of data on the national vaccination information system is not complete, consistent and uniform.

Inspecting the actual work of preventing and combating measles at Bac Ha District General Hospital, the working group highly appreciated the hospital's implementation of many measures to control the epidemic and provide effective treatment. Isolation areas were arranged separately, while human resources, drugs and medical supplies were increased to promptly treat patients. The hospital received and treated 66 patients with measles, with no severe cases. However, the working group also requested that the hospital promptly triage suspected measles patients, provide hand soap, separate drinking cups and require family members to wear masks in the treatment area to avoid cross-infection.

Working with the District Health Center, the working group listened to reports on the epidemic situation in the area, coordination work to deploy the detection of the source of infection, zoning, isolation and treatment of measles. Accordingly, the total number of measles cases as of April 8 in the district was 663 cases, 524 cases have been cured. Through monitoring, it was shown that the cases were concentrated in highland villages and vaccination depressions. The patients all had similar clinical symptoms such as: fever, rash, cough, runny nose, red eyes; the age group affected was mainly preschool and primary school.

Immediately after the outbreak, specialized units conducted investigations, monitoring, and collected samples for definitive diagnosis; actively treated patients, arranged isolation areas at the District General Hospital; closely monitored the epidemic situation in the district; instructed locations with cases to continue to strictly implement epidemic prevention measures such as: monitoring, disinfection, isolation, personal protection, masks, and environmental sanitation. In particular, the district health sector has stepped up the campaign for children from 6 months to 10 years old and medical staff in communes and towns in the district. Total number of injections during the epidemic: 1,281/1,321, reaching 96.9%.

Speaking at the monitoring program, the leader of the Provincial Center for Disease Control acknowledged the efforts of the Si Ma Cai health sector in preventing and fighting measles in the district. However, in order to control the epidemic situation, in the coming time, the District Health Center, health stations of communes and towns in the area will strengthen screening of subjects to carry out catch-up vaccinations and catch-up vaccinations for subjects who have not been fully vaccinated; direct the People's Committees of communes and towns, associations, departments, branches, and mass organizations of districts and communes to coordinate with the health sector to implement activities to prevent and fight infectious diseases in general, and measles in particular, ensuring early control and containment of the source of infection, limiting the spread, outbreak, and prolongation of the epidemic.
