As of the morning of April 7, in Orsk City, Orenburg Province, Russia - less than 20km north of the border with Kazakhstan, there were still 1,784 areas with nearly 6,500 houses flooded, some places up to 2m deep.
The mayor of Orsk called it the largest flood in the history of the entire region. TASS news agency reported that Russian Emergency Situations Minister Aleksander Kurenkov personally arrived in Orsk to inspect and coordinate rescue operations.
Earlier, on the evening of April 5 (local time), the rising water of the Ural River caused the Orsk Dam to burst. By the morning of April 6, more than 2,400 buildings in this city of 200,000 people were flooded and electricity was cut off in some areas. The Orenburg Oblast Investigation Committee has opened a criminal case in the Orsk Dam collapse to clarify responsibilities and violations that caused widespread flooding here. According to the Oblast Prosecutor's Office, the Orsk Dam burst may have been due to inadequate maintenance. Information from the public procurement portal said that since 2021, the Oblast government has reduced the cost of dam maintenance by more than 30%.
