The Russian Defense Ministry said its troops had captured the village of Krymske in the northeastern suburb of Toretsk, in the eastern Donetsk region and the scene of fierce fighting in recent months.
At least four people were killed last night in Russian attacks on the central Ukrainian city of Poltava and the northeastern city of Kharkov.
Ukrainian authorities issued a nationwide air strike alert shortly before 7am (12:00 GMT) on February 1, warning of a missile and drone threat in several areas. The Russian Defense Ministry said the overnight attacks targeted gas and energy facilities supplying Ukraine's "military-industrial complex".
For his part, President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attacks showed Ukraine needed more defenses to defend itself against "Russian terrorism."
"Last night, Russia attacked our cities with various weapons: missiles, drones, aviation bombs. Every air defense system, every anti-missile system is a lifesaver. It is very important that our partners act... and increase pressure on Russia," he stressed, adding that damage had been reported in six provinces: Kharkov, Khmelnytsky, Kiev, Odessa, Sumy and Zaporizhzhia.
