Vu Ngoc Dang: 'I do not imitate the movie Parasite'

Director Vu Ngoc Dang denied copying ideas when the new film was said by the audience to have many similarities with the famous Korean work "Parasite".

On film forums, many audiences think that the work evokes associations with Parasite (Vietnamese name: Parasite ) with the same theme of families in opposing classes: the upper class and the working poor. Vu Ngoc Dang's film also revolves around a group of characters who fake their backgrounds, staging a drama to play the role of aristocrats similar to Bong Joon Ho's work.

The mother (played by Le Giang) also works as a maid. The character of Mrs. Phuong (played by Thu Trang) has a scene that shows prejudices about rich and poor - similar to the Korean work. Many viewers wonder if the Vietnamese producer copied the idea of a foreign film or bought the script to remake it.

At the project introduction event on the afternoon of October 1 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vu Ngoc Dang denied imitating, saying that the similarity between the two films was just a coincidence. The Bride of a Noble Family written by a Vietnamese crew, inspired by some true stories in showbiz. "The story of rich and poor has been exploited in many other films around the world. I think that topic is of interest and sympathy anywhere. My film will not have the color of Parasite Because it's more about entertainment, about 70% of the content is comedy," he said.

Released in 2019, Parasite became one of the most notable films of the year. The film won historic victory at the Oscars with four awards: International Feature Film, Screenplay, Director and Best Picture. The film tells the story of a poor family of four in Seoul, Korea. While the two children try to find free wifi to access the internet, the father (played by Song Kang Ho) is depressed because of unemployment, always hiding from debt. Driven to the brink, they make a plan to change their lives. With a fake university degree, the eldest son Ki Woo (Choi Woo Shik) enters the upper class, then brings the whole family to work for hire, defrauding the rich.

In In the film The Bride of a Rich Family , director Vu Ngoc Dang chose many familiar names to collaborate with, such as Thu Trang, Le Giang, Ngoc Nga, and Kieu Minh Tuan. He asked the cast to invest in their appearance to create a new look when on the big screen. Kieu Minh Tuan had to gain 15 kg, dye his skin black, and wear a wig when playing the role of a father in a poor working-class family.

Thu Trang was given a role with a lot of room for psychological drama - Mrs. Phuong, Bao Hoang's mother, a large business owner. At first, she hesitated when invited because she was not used to playing characters with luxurious and wealthy appearances. "After that, director Vu Ngoc Dang convinced me that this would be my most different role ever," said Thu Trang.
