Thanks to a surge in durian exports, Vietnam has surpassed Chile to become the second largest fruit and vegetable exporter to China.
Data from China Customs shows that in 2023, the export of vegetables, tubers, fruits and processed products from countries to this market reached 24.4 billion USD. Of which, Thailand continued to lead with a turnover of 8.6 billion USD, accounting for 36% of the market share in this market. Compared to the same period in 2022, Thailand's market share decreased by nearly 2%.
Vietnam ranked second with a turnover of 3.4 billion USD. Vietnam's market share in the Chinese market nearly doubled from 8% in 2022 to 14% in 2023. Vietnam emerged as a phenomenon and surpassed Chile - the country that has ranked second in fruit and vegetable export turnover to China for many years.
Sharing with VnExpress , Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, said that the reason why Vietnam surpassed Chile was due to the sudden increase in durian export turnover. In addition, last year China also increased its import of processed fruits and vegetables from Vietnam, causing the export turnover of this item to skyrocket.
Currently, Vietnam is a "heavyweight" competitor that Chile and Thailand are wary of. This year, when Vietnam's frozen durian, avocado, and coconut are officially exported to this market, the turnover will explode and the market share among exporting countries to China will continue to be redistributed. In addition to having an abundant supply, Vietnam has an advantage over the two countries above in terms of cost and transportation time. Vietnam's climate is also more favorable than the above countries.
To make exports more favorable, Mr. Nguyen said that producers and purchasing enterprises need to cooperate more closely to improve product quality. For processed goods, improve designs and meet the standards of importing countries.
During Xi Jinping’s recent visit, China said it would open its market for many potential agricultural products from Vietnam, including fresh coconuts, frozen fruit products, citrus fruits, avocados, custard apples, and plums. During the visit, the two sides also signed a protocol on watermelon exports.
In the joint statement, the two countries agreed to apply measures to expand the scale of bilateral trade in a balanced and sustainable manner. Measures to ensure the smooth supply chain of goods and pilot smart border gates at the Tan Thanh - Po Chai and Huu Nghi border gates to increase customs clearance efficiency were also agreed to be promoted by the two countries.
According to the General Department of Customs, fruit and vegetable exports in 2023 will reach 5.6 billion USD, an increase of 80% over the same period in 2022. Of which, China continues to be the largest export market for Vietnamese fruits and vegetables, accounting for an overwhelming 60% of the total industry turnover.
