On November 15, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien had a working session with Mr. Jose Fernandez, US Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy and Environment.
At the meeting, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien and Deputy Foreign Minister Jose Fernandez agreed that the overall bilateral relationship between Vietnam and the United States is witnessing strong development in all areas; agreed that the two agencies need to strengthen cooperation to effectively implement cooperation programs, creating substantive changes, commensurate with the comprehensive strategic partnership.
As Chairman of the Vietnam Subcommittee of the Vietnam - US Trade and Investment Council (TIFA), Minister Nguyen Hong Dien requested the US Department of State to advise the US Department of Commerce to speed up the process of reviewing and soon recognizing Vietnam as a market economy; to have objective and fair assessments, in accordance with WTO regulations, in Trade Defense investigations.
Agreeing with Deputy Minister Jose W. Fernandez's assessment of a number of remaining economic and trade issues between the two countries, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien affirmed that Vietnam will continue to strengthen dialogue with the United States to resolve them while being ready to create an open business environment and favorable conditions for business operations, meeting the interests of both countries.
The two sides reviewed the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on Comprehensive Energy Cooperation signed by the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade and the US Department of State in Washington in September 2019. This is considered an important milestone opening a new page of deeper and more comprehensive cooperation in the energy sector, creating the most favorable conditions for the business communities of the two countries to exploit market opportunities of the two countries through the existing bilateral cooperation framework.
Discussing the US's interest in enhancing cooperation in the semiconductor sector and developing a fundamental industry in Vietnam, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien suggested that the two agencies should soon establish a Working Group in this field, focusing on in-depth discussions on three contents, including: Policy consultation, perfecting the legal framework; Cooperation in training and developing human resources; and Organization to connect businesses and investors of the two countries.
Deputy Minister Jose W. Fernandez also expressed his high agreement with the proposal of the Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade, suggesting that a phone call be held soon to discuss in more depth the contents that US businesses are currently interested in and wish to participate in cooperation and investment in Vietnam, in which cooperation in energy and industry is the top priority.
