According to statistics from the Department of Education and Training of Dak Lak province, the number of failing scores (1 point or less) in the 10th grade entrance exam in this province reached nearly 2,000, of which the majority were failing scores in Math.
Specifically, in the 10th grade entrance exam in the province, there were 1,887 failing scores, of which Math accounted for the majority with 1,799 failing scores, Foreign Language had 14 failing scores and Literature had 74 failing scores.
Talking to Dan Viet reporter, Ms. Tran Thi Van (character's name has been changed), a junior high school teacher in Dak Lak, said that there were many reasons for the above situation. The objective reason was that the entrance exam for grade 10 was announced not long before the exam, so students had very little time to review and prepare mentally for the exam .
The benchmark scores for grade 10 caused a "big surprise", Dak Lak still lacked nearly 700 targets, the exam scores had nearly 2,000 failing scores (below 1 point).
However, according to Ms. Van, there are some subjective reasons such as the change in teaching methods in a positive direction is still slow; the application of information technology and software in teaching is still very little; the organization of review sessions for good students and tutoring for weak students is not regular; many students have lopsided learning.
According to Mr. NTĐ, former Principal of a secondary school (Dak Lak), many teachers have not yet fully developed their capacity. The sense of responsibility, knowledge, and pedagogical capacity of some teachers are still weak, not meeting the requirements, lacking investment in expertise, and little learning. In addition, the approach of teachers to students is limited, too rigid, leading to boredom in teaching and learning.
Ms. Vu Thi Thanh Thuy (whose child just took the 10th grade entrance exam) said that for many years now, the exam and application review have been suspended, so most of the scores are very good. The decision to take the 10th grade entrance exam was not made until the second semester, so the children did not have time to prepare, and many students are studying in an unbalanced way. Along with that, there are currently too many quotas for schools and classes, but if the quota is not met at the end of the year, the scores will have to be raised to meet the quota of excellent and advanced students.
According to Ms. Thuy, the best solution is to hold the exam for the whole province without leaving out any school so that teachers and students can be responsible for their teaching and learning.
Mr. Pham Dang Khoa - Director of the Department of Education and Training of Dak Lak province said that there were two objective reasons for the occurrence of many failed scores.
Firstly, in March, the Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee announced the plan for the 10th grade entrance exam even though the unit had consulted since the beginning of the year. This resulted in students having very little time to prepare for the exam.
Second, this is the entrance exam for grade 10, and it is only held again after 10 years. This leads to students lacking skills in taking the exam because from grade 1 to grade 9, there is no centralized exam for the whole province, so they do not have the opportunity to practice their skills.
Regarding subjective causes, Mr. Khoa said that it is not possible to assess whether this is directly related to teaching and learning. In the near future, the Department of Education and Training of Dak Lak province will review teaching and learning at the secondary school level, and will guide to follow the regulations in any shortcomings.
