VAR (Video Assistant Referee) is considered a big step forward for world football, bringing accurate decisions, increasing transparency and clarity for matches on the field. After a long period of preparation, this technology was officially deployed in the V.League 1 National Championship, opening a historic moment for the entire Vietnamese football industry.
VAR appears in V.League
Since its first appearance at the 2018 World Cup, VAR has gradually become an inevitable trend and standard of modern football. Since then, VAR has been widely applied in major tournaments around the world such as the Champions League, Europa League and Premier League... According to FIFA statistics, the rate of accurate decisions by referees on the field has increased significantly thanks to the effective support of this technology.
Viettel Club vs Hong Linh Ha Tinh will be the first match in Vietnam V.League to apply VAR.
In that flow, Vietnamese football cannot be an exception. Implementing VAR in professional tournaments is what players and fans expect. Since announcing the cooperation, FPT Play has worked hard with VPF to realize this development. The two units have coordinated to organize a training course with FIFA experts for 18 members of the referee team during the V.League break.
After a period of preparation, Hang Day Stadium was identified as the first location to apply VAR. Currently, related work such as geodetic measurements, data integration into the virtual offside line system using artificial intelligence... has been completed under the close supervision of FIFA advisors.
The match between Viettel Club and Hong Linh Ha Tinh therefore became a historical milestone for the National Championship in particular and domestic football in general.
The VAR referee monitors situations from the VAR room and communicates with the main referee on the field.
On the “debut” day, the two referees sitting in the VAR room were the main referee Mai Xuan Hung and assistant Duong Huu Phuc. The assistant’s job was to review the situations and give advice to Mr. Mai Xuan Hung, who would then discuss with the main referee on the field.
The referee team in charge of the match between Viettel Club and Hong Linh Ha Tinh includes: Mr. Ngo Duy Lan (main referee), assistants Nguyen Trung Hau, Pham Hoai Tam and Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Chau (4th referee). All referees on the field will communicate via walkie-talkie and headset with the VAR team to make the most accurate decisions.
Mr. Mai Xuan Hung took on the role of VAR referee in the first match applying this technology.
Currently, both Viettel Club and the away team are in the group competing for the championship. The result of this match will have a significant impact on the ambitions of both sides to be crowned champions, especially when the "red whirlwind" is only 3 points behind the leading team (Hanoi Police Club). The appearance of VAR will help referees confidently make decisions, instead of the difficult decisions of the past.

On July 25, the first part of the film was released to the audience on FPT platforms. This part of the film takes viewers back to the past when VAR was just a preliminary idea until the expected schedule to apply VAR in the matches in phase 2 of V.League 2023.
The remaining two parts of “VAR in Vietnam” will continue to be introduced on FPT Play platforms.
