The US is ready to send experts to Vietnam to support fabric irradiation.

Speaking to Thanh Nien on May 22, Mr. Hoang Trung, Director of the Plant Protection Department, said that the agency is actively preparing to boost lychee exports to demanding markets, including the US market.

It is expected that this year lychees exported to the US will be irradiated in Hanoi.

According to Mr. Hoang Trung, currently, the US and Australia are two markets that require lychees to be treated by irradiation. However, for the Australian market, there are many advantages, as the irradiation and packaging of lychees are carried out right at the Hanoi Irradiation Center.

The US market only accepts two facilities in Ho Chi Minh City and Long An that are qualified for irradiation and packaging. To export lychees to the US, for many years now, businesses have had to transport them from Bac Giang and Hai Duong to the south, which is costly and time-consuming, while lychees have a short season.

This year, the Plant Protection Department worked with APHIS, Global Food Import-Export Joint Stock Company (the coordinating enterprise) and the Hanoi Irradiation Center to install and add equipment so that this facility can be recognized as qualified to irradiate and package lychees for export to the US.

Mr. Hoang Trung informed about new points in the preparation for lychee export in 2023 at the meeting of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on May 21.

Mr. Hoang Trung said that it is expected that by the end of next week, the equipment to control the irradiation line as required by the US will be shipped to Vietnam. When the equipment is available, the Hanoi Irradiation Center will install it immediately.

The Plant Protection Department has invited and the US is ready to send experts to Vietnam to conduct a comprehensive technical assessment and complete the recognition procedures for this irradiation facility. At that time, lychees from Bac Giang and Hai Duong will be transported to Hanoi for irradiation, without having to be transported to the south as in previous years.

"The Plant Protection Department is trying to put the Hanoi Irradiation Center, which is recognized by the US, into operation this year to help businesses export lychees to the US," said Mr. Trung.

Save costs, increase competitiveness

Speaking with Thanh Nien , Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung, General Director of Vina T&T Import-Export Company, said that if the Hanoi Irradiation Center is recognized as qualified, it will open up great opportunities in exporting lychees to the US, as businesses will not have to transport lychees by plane to the South for irradiation.

"Transporting by plane makes each kilogram of lychee cost 11,000 - 12,000 VND more. If the lychee is irradiated in Hanoi, it will be very good for businesses. When costs are reduced, exported lychee will be more competitive," said Mr. Tung.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bac Giang province said that the locality has nearly 30,000 hectares of lychee. Of which, the area of lychee eligible for export to the US has been granted 17 growing area codes, with an area of about 205 hectares. This year, the output of lychee meeting export standards to the US is estimated at 1,500 tons.

Mr. Tran Quang Tan, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Bac Giang province, said that the US is a large market with a lot of potential and if lychee is accepted by this market, it also means it can be exported to many other markets in the world.
