Russian officials said they destroyed at least 20 Ukrainian attack drones as they flew over the Moscow region, which has a population of more than 21 million, and another 124 over eight other regions.
Russian authorities said at least one person was killed near Moscow, a 46-year-old woman. Three of Moscow's four airports were closed for more than six hours and nearly 50 flights were diverted.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the drone attack was another reminder of the true nature of Ukraine's political leadership, which he said included enemies of Russia. "There is no way that attacks on residential areas at night can be linked to military action," Peskov said.
Meanwhile, Ukraine also said that Russia retaliated by attacking the country overnight with 46 drones, of which 38 were destroyed.
Residents said drone attacks in Russia damaged high-rise apartment buildings in the Ramenskoye district of the Moscow region, setting many apartments on fire.
Moscow region governor Andrei Vorobyov said a 46-year-old woman was killed and three people were injured in Ramenskoye. Residents said they woke up to explosions and fire.
“I looked out the window and saw a fireball,” said Alexander Li, a resident of the district. “The windows were blown out by the shock wave.” Georgy, another resident, said he heard drones buzzing outside his building early in the morning.

Ramenskoye district, about 50 kilometers southeast of the Kremlin, has a population of about a quarter of a million people, according to official figures.
More than 70 drones were also shot down in Russia’s Bryansk region and dozens more in other regions, the Russian Defense Ministry said. No damage or casualties were reported there.
After largely defending and fighting on its internal fronts, Ukraine has begun to intensify its attacks deep into Russian territory in recent months, including a surprise advance and partial control of territory in Russia's Kursk border region.
Ukraine says it reserves the right to strike back deep into Russian territory, although Kiev's Western supporters say they do not want a direct confrontation between Russia and the US-led NATO military alliance.
Tuesday's attack followed drone attacks carried out by Ukraine in early September, mainly targeting Russian energy and power facilities.
