The US dollar recovered against major currencies such as the euro and the Japanese yen in the last trading session, after US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell acknowledged the impact of US tariff policies and signaled caution in easing monetary policy in the future.

Mr Powell said tariffs raise the risk of higher inflation and slower growth, underscoring the difficulties ahead for policymakers at the US central bank.

Meanwhile, the AUD hit a five-year low against the greenback, after China announced additional tariffs on US goods on April 4.

Peter Vassallo, FX portfolio manager at BNP Paribas Asset Management, said inflation concerns were justified, given the fact that inflation has been above target for the past five years.

Mr Powell's comments came after data earlier in the day showed nonfarm payrolls increased by 228,000 jobs last month, after increasing by 117,000 jobs in February, well above the forecast of 135,000. The unemployment rate rose to 4.2% from 4.1%.

China has announced an additional 34% tariff on all US goods, starting April 10. The move has added to concerns about an economic slowdown and worsened the outlook for global stocks.

A US inflation indicator due for release next week will show how the price of goods and services is changing for consumers.

On the other hand, the euro fell 0.95% to $1.10947. The currency rose 1.8% on April 3 - its biggest one-day gain since November 2022 - and hit a high of $1.1147, its highest since September 30, 2024. The euro recorded its biggest weekly gain since March 3.

Markets are pricing in four 25 basis point rate cuts by the Fed by the end of the year and are reducing bets on further tightening by the Bank of Japan. They are also fully pricing in three 25 basis point rate cuts by the European Central Bank in December.

The DXY index suffered its worst trading day since November 2022 in the trading session on April 3, then recovered in the most recent trading session.

The Swiss franc rose 0.6% against the euro and hit a six-month high against the dollar.

Meanwhile, the pound fell 1.61% against the greenback to $1.2889, after rising to a high of $1.3207, its first since October 3, 2024. This was the pound's biggest weekly decline since February 24.

The Australian dollar hit its lowest level since early April 2020, falling 4.42% to $0.60490. Similarly, the New Zealand dollar fell 3.42% to $0.55960. The Australian dollar recorded its biggest weekly decline since March 2020.

The CAD fell 0.81% to $1.4208.

Meanwhile, the greenback narrowed losses against the yen, trading up 0.58% at 146.92 yen.
