Yuan Forecast
The focus of the trading day will be on China's key economic data for the first quarter of 2024, which will be closely watched for indicators including industrial production, retail sales, fixed asset investment and home prices to gauge the health of the world's second-largest economy.
China’s central bank (PBOC) also drew attention as it pegged the yuan to its weakest level since March 25 to support the economy. However, the move could fuel concerns about government intervention in the foreign exchange market and further weigh on investor sentiment.
The data will play a key role in determining China’s first-quarter GDP growth figure. Analysts expect China’s first-quarter GDP to fall to 4.6% year-on-year in 2024, down from 5.2% in the previous quarter. That would be the slowest growth since the first quarter of 2023 and reflects the challenges facing the Chinese economy, including a weakening property market and the impact of the trade war with the United States.
