Recently, Vincent Lyne - a retired scientist - announced the discovery of what he believes is the wreckage of MH370, which went missing 11 years ago. What he found was a yellow pixel, described as an "anomaly" in the global topographic model of the ocean.

GEBCO bathymetric data - a digital map of the ocean floor - observed by Mr. Lyne pinpointed the yellow spot at Latitude: 33.02°N, Longitude: 100.27°E. The yellow spot is located on the same longitude as Penang Airport (Malaysia).

Mr Lyne calls it the Penang Longitude Hole – a nearly 6,000m deep crater at the eastern end of Broken Ridge, a rugged and dangerous area of the Indian Ocean.

"At the location where Broken Ridge meets the Diamantina Fracture Zone, a single bright pixel appears. The bright spot has helped pinpoint the location of the wreckage with unprecedented precision," Dr Lyne explained. "At 5,750 metres, it stands out as an anomaly, indicating the likely location of the wreckage of MH370. The discrepancy in the combined sonar and satellite altimeter data creates uncertainty about the location, but the anomaly is clear."

The Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 disappeared on March 8, 2014, while en route from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (Malaysia) to Beijing (China) with 239 people on board. Since then, despite extensive searches, the plane's whereabouts remain one of the greatest mysteries in aviation history.

The search for MH370 lasted more than 11 years

Some debris of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has been found.

More than 11 years after the mysterious disappearance of MH370, on March 11, 2025, Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the government is finalizing a contract with the unit in charge of the latest search for MH370.

Minister Loke affirmed at a press conference on March 11, 2025: "We have not canceled the search, but are still in the process of finalizing the contract. As soon as all procedures are signed, we will announce the latest progress."

The search is expected to be conducted by the Ocean Infinity search company, which was also involved in the previous search for MH370 under a “No Find, No Fee” agreement with the Malaysian government. Ocean Infinity plans to scan approximately 15,000 square kilometers of the seabed in an area near the coordinates identified by Dr. Lyne.

Since MH370 disappeared, more than 30 pieces of suspected debris have washed up on the shores of Africa and Indian Ocean islands. The Malaysian government’s official 2018 report concluded that someone deliberately manipulated the flight control system to divert the plane, but could not identify the person.

With the latest discovery and the ongoing search, the victims' families still hold out hope that the mystery of MH370 will finally be solved, closing a dark chapter in world aviation history.
