More than 20 years ago, people drilled wells and discovered underground water with strange properties. This type of water has now generated thousands of billions of dong in tourism revenue for the entire district.
Water resources bring trillions of value
In 1998, Thanh Thuy district (Phu Tho province) suffered a major drought, and people suffered from a lack of water for daily use. In that context, Mr. Phan Ngoc Thanh (born in 1960) hired people to drill deep into the ground to solve this difficult problem.
To this day, Mr. Thanh is still very proud that the drill 27 years ago created a miracle in developing tourism for his hometown.
Mr. Thanh said that after the drilling team had been working for about 2 days, water began to spurt from underground. The smell of the water was initially unpleasant and cloudy. But as he continued to drill deeper into the ground, he discovered that the water source was very clear and hot.
"When we discovered hot water, I and some people living nearby tried using it to bathe or soak in the water. After bathing, we felt very refreshed and healthy," Mr. Thanh recalled.
Information about the hot water from underground was passed on by word of mouth in the village. After that, many people drilled their own wells and the hot mineral bath service became popular here. In the 2000s, from a few small households, the hot mineral bath service was then expanded to dozens of establishments.
Good news spread far and wide, this hot mineral water is known by people everywhere and they come to experience it.
According to research by scientists, Thanh Thuy has a hot mineral mine with reserves of over 20 million m3 containing many trace elements, including the rare Radon. The temperature of hot mineral water in Thanh Thuy ranges from 37-53 degrees Celsius.
The natural water source has created thousands of billions of VND in tourism revenue for Thanh Thuy district, Phu Tho province. According to statistics from the Thanh Thuy District People's Committee, hot springs are the number 1 tourist attraction in the area.
The district's tourism and service revenue has been increasing steadily in recent years, surpassing the previous year each year. Specifically, in 2023, it will reach VND520 billion and in 2024, it will reach VND780 billion.
From spontaneous baths to 5-star resorts
With rare water resources, tourism services revolving around hot mineral water in Thanh Thuy district are constantly upgraded.
Mr. Vu Duc Kien - Head of the Department of Culture and Information of Thanh Thuy district said: Around 1982, the 303 geological team discovered Thanh Thuy hot mineral water mine. However, it was not until 16 years later, from Mr. Phan Ngoc Thanh's drill, that hot mineral bath services in Thanh Thuy flourished.
According to Mr. Kien, most people who visit the locality experience the hot mineral bath service. He said that hot mineral water is one of the first reasons that convinces tourists to come here.
Recalling the period 2008-2014, Mr. Kien said that there were dozens of spontaneous businesses providing hot mineral bath services. However, with the requirements of the legal corridor and procedures for granting mineral use licenses, the district later decided to coordinate with businesses to upgrade resort services associated with hot mineral baths.
With the above orientation, up to now, in Thanh Thuy district, many large enterprises have invested in resort services, contributing to changing the face of local tourism.
According to statistics, there are currently 6 large enterprises providing high-end resort services in Thanh Thuy district. The total investment of the project in the district is nearly 8,000 billion VND on an area of about 124 hectares.
According to a survey, resort villas are chosen by many families for weekend getaways as each villa can accommodate about 10-12 members.
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Duc (from Hanoi) said that he experienced hot mineral baths at Thanh Thuy for more than 10 years, but when he returned in early 2025, he found that the tourism landscape was completely different.
Head of the Department of Culture and Information of Thanh Thuy district, Vu Duc Kien, is optimistic that in the near future, the district is expected to be the destination of many resort projects combined with hot mineral baths. From there, tourists will have more options to improve the quality of their experience when coming to Thanh Thuy.
