Thanks to the switch to growing green bananas, people in Ban Nguyen commune (Lam Thao, Phu Tho) have a stable income. This year, due to the impact of storm YAGI, banana prices have increased, making people even more excited because of the big profits.
Ban Nguyen Commune, Lam Thao District has long been famous for its vast green banana gardens. With a banana growing area of up to 50 hectares, banana trees are not only a familiar food source but also bring high economic value to the people.

Mr. Bui Minh Duc (Zone 8, Ban Nguyen), who has more than 30 years of experience growing and trading bananas, excitedly said that this year the price of Tet bananas is at a record high.
Mr. Duc also emphasized that bananas in Ban Nguyen are carefully and meticulously cared for by growers, the fruit is large, bright and very beautiful. What is special is that bananas grown in Ban Nguyen land when ripe are golden yellow, the fragrance fills the riverbank; they are sweet, have a characteristic aroma, so they are very popular in the market.
"This year, due to the severe storm damage, banana prices have been higher and have been in high demand since the 11th lunar month. This Tet season, the family sells bananas for 200,000 - 350,000 VND/bunch; green and pink bananas cost from 800,000 - 1 million VND/bunch," said Mr. Duc.
According to Mr. Duc, the effort and cost of caring for banana trees is not large. Banana growers need to focus on fertilizing according to the growth cycle of the banana tree, which is a prerequisite for beautiful, high-quality banana bunches.

"To have a bunch of bananas that meet OCOP standards, growers must have a firm grasp of the care process at the beginning of planting; loosen the soil, apply enough organic fertilizer, manure, microorganisms... Around the beginning of the 10th lunar month, each bunch must be covered to prevent insects and frost from affecting the appearance and quality of the bananas for Tet," Mr. Duc noted how to plant and care for bananas.
Mr. Duc's family has 2 hectares of land along the Red River, growing bananas and plantains. Every year, after deducting expenses, he earns about 400 million VND in profit. This 2025 Lunar New Year alone, he earns nearly 200 million VND.
Not only Mr. Duc's household, many banana garden owners in Ban Nguyen commune have an income of at least nearly 100 million VND on the occasion of Tet 2025; and a profit of more than 200 million VND growing bananas each year.
Mr. Bui Minh Thiet (residing in zone 8, Ban Nguyen commune) said that with the advantage of fertile alluvial land along the Red River, in previous years he grew crops for his living such as corn, peanuts, green vegetables, tomatoes...
However, after many years of cultivation, it was found that the above crops did not bring high economic efficiency and required a lot of effort. Through research, learning and market penetration, he decided to switch to growing bananas to supply the local market and wholesale to Hanoi, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, etc.

Mr. Thiet shared that the most worrying thing for people when growing bananas is the banana root treatment. Therefore, to prevent the banana plants from rotting, he applied science and technology, using decomposed manure to prevent the banana roots from rotting; using microorganisms to prevent mold at the base of the banana trees. Thanks to that, Mr. Thiet's family's banana garden grew and developed well, producing large bunches, plump fruits and high productivity.
According to Mr. Thiet, in the past 3 years, his family's annual income from banana cultivation has increased significantly. The Ban Nguyen commune government created conditions for him to sign a land contract, renewable every 5 years, which helped him feel secure in expanding production. In recent years, banana trees have been the family's main source of income; after deducting expenses, the profit is up to 200 million VND per year.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Nam, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ban Nguyen Commune, said that implementing the program of converting the structure of crops and livestock towards diversifying commodity production, over the past years, farmers' association members of the commune have introduced many new varieties of plants and animals into production, bringing high economic efficiency.
In particular, the banana growing model has helped people increase their income and gradually become rich, thereby contributing to the implementation of the new rural construction program in the locality. Currently, the banana growing area of Ban Nguyen commune has reached nearly 50 hectares.
People mainly grow pink bananas, green bananas and western bananas. Each bunch of bananas produces 8-11 bunches, each bunch produces 20-27 fruits, some bunches have more than 30 fruits... Ban Nguyen green bananas are purchased by traders at the garden and exported to all provinces and cities across the country. In 2023, Ban Nguyen green bananas will be recognized as a 3-star OCOP product, further increasing the value of the product and income for farmers.
"The banana growing model is being replicated in Ban Nguyen commune and is one of the production models with large revenue sources, the right direction in the goal of economic development and sustainable poverty reduction. In addition to creating jobs and increasing income for farmers, this model also contributes significantly to the program of developing the agricultural, rural and farmer economy in the direction of commodity production," Mr. Nam emphasized.
Not only in Ban Nguyen commune, on the alluvial lands along the Red River, people in Vinh Lai, Cao Xa, Xuan Huy communes... of Lam Thao district, banana growing also brings in large revenue and becomes the largest and second largest banana region in the province.
Up to now, there have been about 300 hectares of green bananas, pink bananas, western bananas... of which more than 200 hectares produce products, with a yield of over 40 tons/ha, and an output of nearly 9,000 tons. On average, Lam Thao harvests about 10,000 tons each year, most of which are exported to the Chinese market.
Thanks to understanding market information and building raw material areas that fully meet standards, many banana farmers in Lam Thao have become rich.
