The above issue was raised by Mr. Tai at the inspection and survey session of the Ministry of Education and Training on the implementation of digital transcripts, development of digital learning materials and organization of 2-session teaching/day for general education in Ho Chi Minh City yesterday afternoon (April 3).

Mr. Thai Van Tai said that the 2018 General Education Program's ultimate goal is students' capacity and qualities. In addition to teaching knowledge, the school's mission is to create an environment for students to develop their capacity according to the requirements of each subject. To do that, it is necessary to teach 2 sessions/day.

Currently, primary schools are required to teach 2 sessions/day. In the near future, the Ministry of Education and Training will amend this to require secondary and high schools to teach 2 sessions/day. In May, the Ministry of Education and Training will issue guidelines for teaching 2 sessions/day and clarify each content to facilitate schools in the new school year.

“Teaching 2 sessions/day is to develop students’ qualities and abilities. Any place that does not guarantee 2 sessions/day is still in debt to its students,” said Mr. Tai, adding that teaching 2 sessions/day must fully exploit the capacity of facilities and teaching staff, serving the teaching of students, but it is also necessary to separate and clearly identify which content the school implements and which content needs external support.

Department Head Thai Van Tai noted that when teaching 2 sessions/day, schools cannot combine teaching all subjects according to the 2018 General Education Program in the morning, but the timetable needs to be designed and arranged to spread evenly across both sessions to reduce pressure on students. In addition, it is necessary to exploit learning topics and subjects to turn knowledge into capacity for students. The topics and subjects are organized completely differently from the teaching of subjects of the 2018 General Education Program.

It is expected that there are 5 mandatory contents that schools must include in their educational content when organizing 2 sessions/day of teaching: Education to form digital skills for students; STEM education; Career education; Traffic Safety Law; Topics and educational activities to form students' capacity.

Ms. Lam Hong Lam Thuy, Head of the General Education Department (Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training) informed that currently, 92.9% of primary schools in the city teach 2 sessions/day, the rate of teaching 2 sessions/day in secondary schools is 93%.
