The incident happened in 2023. Son Jun-jo was arrested by the Liaoning provincial public security agency after he was accused of accepting money to fix matches. At that time, the South Korean midfielder was playing for Shangdong Luneng in the Chinese Super League. This was shocking news because Son Jun-jo was a very important member of Shandong. Since arriving in 2021, he quickly showed great influence, leading Shandong to the Chinese national championship. He was voted the best player of the 2021 season.
But two years later, Son Jun-jo, a hero, was turned into a criminal. After a period of detention, he was brought to trial and the Chinese Football Association gave the midfielder born in 1992 a “lifetime ban”.
Son Jun-ho was once detained in China
However, Son has continued to play since then. He left China and sought opportunities in his home country of South Korea. China was not satisfied and filed a lawsuit with FIFA, asking the world football governing body to intervene. They want Son to serve this punishment on a global scale.
However, FIFA has just sent a notice to the Chinese Football Association (CFA), confirming that Son Jun-ho's punishment is only valid within Chinese territory. Therefore, this Korean player is allowed to sign a contract with any team in the world outside of China.
To avoid lawsuits, Son's home club, Suwon FC, has parted ways with him. Son is currently unemployed and is trying to find a new team after the Lunar New Year holiday.
