US chip giant 'in trouble' in China

Reuters reported today, May 22, that Micron, a US chip giant, has failed Beijing’s cybersecurity review and is therefore banned from selling to China’s critical information infrastructure operators (CIIOs), which cover a wide range of sectors, from telecommunications to banks and water utilities.

Therefore, all companies and enterprises under the CIIO must stop purchasing Micron products, according to the decision from the Cyber Security Assessment Office under the Cyber Security Administration of China (CAC).

China's CIIO regulations are extensive, covering a wide range of sectors deemed vital to national security and human life, including public sectors such as communications services, energy, transportation, water resources, and finance.

The announcement comes 50 days after the CAC launched an investigation into Micron products in late March for national security concerns. According to the latest announcement from the CAC, Micron products pose serious cybersecurity risks, posing a significant threat to the security of China’s critical information infrastructure supply chain and national security.

The decision effectively bans the sale of almost all Micron products in China, wiping out a market that would account for about 11% of the US company's $30.8 billion in 2022 revenue.

Micron's major customers in China include Lenovo, Xiaomi, Inspur, ZTE, Coolpad, China Electronics Corp and Oppo, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

The US and Micron have not commented on China's decision.

US, allies seek to cut off flow of processor chips to Russia

Last week, Micron announced plans to invest up to 500 billion yen ($3.7 billion) in extreme ultraviolet (EUVL) technology in Japan, a cutting-edge, high-precision lithography technology that will make Micron the first chipmaker to bring the advanced chipmaking technology to Japan.

Japan, once the world's leader in chip manufacturing, is trying to rebuild its domestic chip manufacturing base by attracting foreign investment. And chip giants Micron and Samsung are taking advantage of investment opportunities in Japan.
