Williams (left) had a promising start at MU under Solskjaer. |
At 24, Williams was once seen as the future of the "Red Devils" when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave him the opportunity to debut for the first team in 2019. He possesses speed, good ability to attack and defend and was expected to break into the England squad. But since then, injuries, fluctuating form and off-field problems have left Williams behind.
No club, no games and no future - Williams admitted to the darkest time of his life. In a conversation with Ben Foster on the Fozcast podcast , he shared: "I was just hanging around in my room, lying in bed. People would knock on the door, asking me to go out for a walk, have a coffee, but I wouldn't leave the house. Everything was really bad."
The feeling of loss reached a point where even watching football was painful. "I hate watching football now, because I just want to be there, playing football," Williams said. "I miss getting on the team bus, missing training. Sometimes it's just too much."
Williams lost his way after leaving Old Trafford. |
The troubles didn’t stop there. Last month, Williams appeared in court after being charged with causing a crash while driving an Audi at 99 mph near Handforth, Cheshire, on 20 August 2023. He was taken to hospital for treatment before being transferred to Middlewich Remand Prison.
At the trial, Williams admitted two counts of dangerous driving and driving without public liability insurance. British media unanimously confirmed that the maximum sentence for these crimes could be up to 2 years in prison.
Although it is unclear what the future holds, Williams believes that time away from the pitch may be necessary for him to rebuild his life: "Maybe I need this break, to look back at everything and start over."
Williams has made 47 Premier League appearances, won the League Cup and represented England at youth level. His impressive form in the 2019/20 season has earned him a four-year contract worth £65,000 a week.
However, his subsequent career has not lived up to expectations. Williams's mistake is a reminder that the path from "promising talent" to "broken career" can be very short.
'Old man' Elanga soloed from midfield, causing sadness for MU. In the early morning of April 2, Nottingham Forest beat MU 1-0 in round 30 thanks to the only goal by Anthony Elanga.
