Learn to make orange dumplings yourself

Ms. Do Vu Gia Linh (31 years old, living in Ho Chi Minh City) said that when she joined a group on social networks, she almost mistook them for real oranges and tangerines when she saw people sharing this unique dumpling dish. She was curious, learned how to make it online and immediately tried it. “I had only made dumplings once before. Unlike traditional dumplings that require even hands and rolling into a ball, orange dumplings can be made naturally if they are a little clumsy, because in reality, oranges are not even,” Ms. Linh said.

She shared that looking at oranges, everyone thinks it is difficult, but on the contrary, with a little research, you can make it. The ingredients include flour, sugar, milk powder, cooking oil, yeast, etc. To make the dumplings orange, Linh uses pumpkin powder, gac fruit powder or carrot powder. Then, she uses toothpicks to skewer the dumplings while they are still warm to create roughness and pitting like the peel of a real orange. After shaping, the dumplings are steamed for about 10 minutes over low heat and left in the oven for 3 minutes before being taken out.

Each step of making the cake was recorded by Ms. Linh to share on social networks. After shaping the cake, use a bunch of toothpicks/spiky skewers to create a rough shape like an orange before steaming.

Use chopsticks to create stems

Use the back of a knife or dough cutter to create a groove around the stem.

According to Ms. Linh, orange-shaped dumplings are not as difficult to make as many people think.

She used the tip of a chopstick to press down to create a dent like the stem of a fruit, and used the back of a knife to press down, creating wrinkles around the stem to make it more vivid. If she wanted the bun to be shaped like a pomelo, she added green color to the outside by using a brush dipped in a little colored water and rubbing it lightly. The colored particles will shoot out like mist and cover the bun. The finished orange bun will have white dough covering the filling, orange dough covering the white dough, and green color covering the skin of the bun.

“I found the texture of the dumplings very easy to adjust to resemble citrus fruits. People just need to follow the recipe and be careful to do the steps correctly. I succeeded the first time. After sharing it on social media, I was so happy because the orange dumplings “tricked” many people’s eyes,” Linh happily said.

Sister Linh glued the dumplings on the tree to make it look like a real orange.

Many people in Linh's family did not recognize the dumplings and mistook them for oranges because they looked so similar.

During the pandemic, Linh had more time at home, and there were fewer restaurants, so she cooked according to her preferences. “After I finished making it, I put it on a plate and invited the whole family. No one in the family knew it was a dumpling, everyone thought it was citrus fruit until they broke it open and realized it was a dumpling. This was also an interesting experience when making cakes,” Linh shared.

The cake filling is made by Linh from pre-cooked blueberries.

Many people are surprised to know that oranges are made from dumplings.

Can't bear to eat because it's too beautiful

Similarly, Ms. Luong Thanh (27 years old, in Nam Tu Liem District, Hanoi) happened to see a post on the citrus-shaped dumpling making group so she looked at the recipe and asked how to make it.

“I was impressed with the orange-and-tangerine shaped dumplings, even though the skins were smooth and taut. I thought that if the skins were rough, they would look more natural, so I tried to do a little bit of everything from different places and then combined them myself, creating the wrinkled shapes to successfully make oranges and yellow tangerines from dumplings,” she said.

The green cake crust was made by Ms. Thanh to resemble a pomelo.

Ms. Thanh said that making orange-shaped dumplings is not difficult. At first glance, it may seem very complicated, but when you start making it, it is extremely simple. “Compared to other cakes, orange-shaped dumplings are quite easy and quick to make. The first time I made it, my husband did not recognize it and thought I went to buy oranges early in the morning,” Ms. Thanh confided.

The "orange" bunch makes many people fascinated because it is so beautiful

Ms. Thanh took pictures of the “oranges” and shared the recipe on social media for everyone to see. Ms. Thanh’s “oranges” received nearly 40,000 interactions and thousands of comments. She was very happy to receive so much love and attention from everyone.

“I don’t open the lid while steaming because it will cause the cake to deflate due to the change in temperature. When turning off the stove, I also leave it for about 5 minutes before taking it out. When turning the sieve upside down, don’t put it too close, there is space for the color to fall naturally. After finishing, take a stem and attach it to get a complete orange,” Thanh shared.

Ms. Thanh's post about orange dumplings received a lot of interaction from netizens.
