Why aren't Tran Quyet Chien and Vietnam's top 3-cushion carom players present?
According to the announcement from the host country Thailand, the 33rd SEA Games will have billiards and snooker. However, the 3-cushion carom billiards event will not appear. This is quite a pity for the Vietnamese sports delegation at the 2025 Southeast Asian Games. Because in the 3-cushion carom billiards event, Tran Quyet Chien and the Vietnamese male players are of a level superior to the general level in the region. Therefore, if they are allowed to compete, the gold medal in this event will be difficult to escape the hands of Vietnamese athletes.
Even in 3-cushion carom billiards, Vietnam can think of 2 gold medals, as Vietnamese female players are also very strong. In the 3-cushion carom billiards category for women, the opponent of Vietnamese female players comes from Cambodia, with the name Sruong Pheavy (many times champion of PBA tournament, Korea).
The dominance of Vietnamese 3-cushion carom billiards in Southeast Asia has been proven through the previous two SEA Games. At the 31st SEA Games at home (2022), Tran Quyet Chien won the gold medal when he defeated his teammate Nguyen Duc Anh Chien in the final match. At the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia (2023), Nguyen Tran Thanh Tu won the gold medal, while Nguyen Duc Anh Chien once again won the silver medal.
Thus, Vietnam's 3-cushion carom billiards team will not be able to defend its championship title at the largest regional sports event. In particular, Tran Quyet Chien also missed the opportunity to add another SEA Games gold medal to his collection of achievements.
Tran Quyet Chien is currently the number 1 player in Vietnam in 3-cushion carom billiards. 2024 marks the greatest success in Quyet Chien's career to date. Quyet Chien and Bao Phuong Vinh won the prestigious 3-cushion carom billiards team championship. He won 2 more 3-cushion carom billiards World Cup championships in 2024, bringing the total number of championships to 4 (previously 2 titles in 2018 and 2023). Quyet Chien also finished second in the race for the title of best player of 2024 of the World Carom Billiards Federation (after Dutch player Dick Jaspers).
At the end of 2024, Tran Quyet Chien was also honored as male athlete of the year at the Victory Cup - an award considered the Oscar of Vietnamese sports.
Tran Quyet Chien also came second (after shooter Trinh Thu Vinh) in the vote for Athlete of the Year. The vote has been organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Department of Physical Training and Sports, the Vietnam Olympic Committee and the Vietnam Paralympic Committee since 1978.
Still expecting high performance
According to the plan, the Vietnam billiards & snooker team will select athletes to participate in the 33rd SEA Games based on their performance at the 2025 national billiards & snooker championship. The qualifying round of this tournament will take place in April, followed by the final round in June in Ba Ria - Vung Tau.
Billiards and snooker at the 33rd SEA Games do not have a category that Vietnamese players dominate, which is 3-cushion carom (including 1-cushion carom). However, the Vietnamese billiards and snooker team still hopes to achieve results in the pool billiards category (hole).
Recently, the billiards pool movement in Vietnam has been developing very well. Many Vietnamese pool players have been able to compete fairly with the world's top players. In Southeast Asia, the most promising candidates for gold medals in billiards pool are the players from the Philippines. The Philippines has many players in the world's top and has won many prestigious world billiards pool tournaments.
