Waiting for Coach Kim Sang-sik's talent of 'knocking young heads' to win the SEA Games

Coach Kim Sang-sik's problem

The success of coach Kim Sang-sik and the Vietnamese team at the AFF Cup 2024 comes from many factors: good team management ability, suitable tactics, effective motivation, and the presence of Nguyen Xuan Son - a striker who has raised the whole team's level with a comprehensive playing style and "unparalleled" attacking skills.

However, it is not by chance that in most developed football countries in the world, the head coach of the national team and the head coach of the youth team are two different people, with different teams.

Will coach Kim Sang-sik succeed with U.22 Vietnam?

Because coaching a national team is different from coaching a youth team. At the national team level, the coach's job is to manage the "egos" of individual stars, making the best use of all resources to bring about suitable playing styles and results. With established players who have clearly defined their footballing mindset, the national team coach does not need to teach much. The orientation aspect will be more focused on.

In the youth team, the coach's task is more about teaching tactics and techniques, when most of the players have not yet clearly formed their style. In many aspects, they are... blank sheets of paper, so that the coaching staff can paint colorful ideas about football thinking. At the same time, coaching the youth team also requires close attention, perseverance and the ability to encourage the spirit of the "captain". Because unlike adult players who listen little and understand much, young players who are inexperienced need a teacher with enough strength and vision to guide them both in tactics and in the psychology of competition.

For a long time, Vietnamese football has operated with the philosophy of using the same coach at both the national and youth levels. Having the same coach can create a close connection in terms of personnel and playing style for both levels. However, it is not easy for a coach to "both grind rice and carry the baby", that is, effectively manage two groups that have many specific differences.

Manage

Coach Park Hang-seo is a rare person who has achieved success thanks to his ability to manage the team and inspire the team. However, in the SEA Games 30 and 31 that he has conquered, the mark of overage players such as Hung Dung, Hoang Duc, Trong Hoang or Tien Linh is very strong. Overage players are like "extended arms" of the head coach, helping to stabilize the spirit and playing spirit of young players.

U.22 Vietnam stumbled at SEA Games 32 due to lack of experience

At the same time, the young generation under Mr. Park also has a very good foundation of technical tactics and football thinking thanks to the previous systematic accumulation process.

Coach Kim Sang-sik does not have this advantage. He will lead the U.22 Vietnam team to the SEA Games with a purely under-23 squad. There is no longer any "extended arm" for Mr. Kim to motivate the team. At the same time, the young generation in the hands of the Korean strategist is difficult to compare with the previous generation in terms of combat experience. Among the most potential young players born from 2003 onwards, only Trung Kien, Thai Son, Dinh Bac and Vi Hao have "rolled around" a lot in the V-League. The number of experienced players is not enough to assemble a squad.

Coach Kim Sang-sik once admitted to the press: "Young Vietnamese players have very few opportunities to show themselves." However, he cannot change this reality. Unlike the national team, Coach Kim Sang-sik will have to manage with a much more modest player base and cannot "push" teams to let young talents play more. The task of the Korean coach, in such an immature team, is to boost the players' spirit, create motivation and take advantage of the limited training time to build a playing style suitable for his students' abilities. Mr. Kim cannot do the job of a club-level coach, but can only build a "house" that best suits the existing foundation.

Coach Kim will push his students to improve themselves.

During rare training sessions with U.22 Vietnam last year, coach Kim Sang-sik encouraged his players to "play freely for fun and show all they have". That was the first step to show Mr. Kim's gentle approach: creating a pleasant and optimistic atmosphere, encouraging his students to discover their own potential within the framework of disciplined play.

"Knocking children's heads" is never easy. However, this is an interesting test for Mr. Kim to discover new things in his coaching thinking!
