The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training will promote extracurricular sports clubs in schools, so that each student can confidently play a sport.
On October 9, Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, said this is a goal in the draft strategy for developing the city's education until 2030, with a vision to 2045.
According to him, students are considered proficient in a sport when they are familiar with, confident in, and regularly practice that sport.
The report of the Department of Political and Ideological Affairs shows that in addition to regular physical education classes, extracurricular sports activities also attract a large number of students in the form of martial arts, gymnastics, football, basketball, and badminton clubs. To date, 90% of schools have sports clubs, and more than 72% of students regularly participate in these activities.
The head of the city's education sector assessed that extracurricular sports activities in some schools are currently very active, but many places are still too formalistic and not really effective. Therefore, the Department requires schools to promote this movement.
Statistics on the number of sports clubs, divided by subject at schools:
Football | Basketball | Volleyball | Badminton | Swimming | Vovinam | Traditional martial arts | Athletics | Football | |
Elementary | 195 | 162 | 63 | 91 | 54 | 70 | 26 | 40 | 22 |
Secondary School | 138 | 97 | 75 | 101 | 25 | 24 | 18 | 29 | 17 |
High School | 107 | 76 | 59 | 75 | 31 | 18 | 12 | 9 | 26 |
Mr. Duong Tri Dung, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, said that each school, depending on its conditions, must organize three or more sports clubs for students to practice. Currently, some schools have exceeded this requirement, but many have not met it.
The Department noted that organizing extracurricular sports activities should be consistent with the content of physical education, diversifying forms of exercise, maintaining morning exercises, mid-class exercises, and teaching traditional martial arts and Vovinam.
"Club activity times should be arranged flexibly, in line with the study schedule to attract a large number of students," Mr. Dung added.
In the 2023-2024 school year, Ho Chi Minh City will have about 1.7 million students at all levels and 2,700 schools. Of which, at the general education level (grades 1-12), nearly 900 schools are public with more than 1.2 million students.
