The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just sent an urgent document to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism regarding the renamingof Hanoi Highway to Vo Nguyen Giap Street.

Accordingly, the proposed road section to be renamed starts from Saigon Bridge to Thu Duc intersection, nearly 7.8 km long.

The reason for Ho Chi Minh City's proposal is to rename the Hanoi Highway section to Vo Nguyen Giap Street to recognize the great contributions of General Vo Nguyen Giap to the cause of national liberation and unification; at the same time, it shows the gratitude of the Party Committee, government and people of Ho Chi Minh City to the legendary general who made great contributions to the nation.

After the name change, a continuous route will be formed: Hanoi - Vo Nguyen Giap - Dien Bien Phu highway, creating a connection between historical events and historical figures such as the Dien Bien Phu campaign and General Vo Nguyen Giap. This will also facilitate the education of patriotic traditions for generations and help people look up street names and places conveniently.

Regarding the above proposal, according to the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City, on March 8, the Advisory Council for naming and renaming streets and public works in the city met to give opinions on renaming Hanoi Highway from Saigon Bridge to Thu Duc intersection to Vo Nguyen Giap Street. Accordingly, 12/18 members attending the meeting agreed with the renaming.

Previously, at the end of 2021, Thu Duc City People's Committee issued a document to collect opinions from Party organizations, the Standing Committee of the People's Council, specialized departments, the Thu Duc City Fatherland Front Committee, unions and wards with the planned road section to be renamed. As a result, the units agreed with this proposal. Particularly, 8 related wards had 467/510 opinions in agreement, accounting for 91.6%.

In addition, the City Cultural Heritage Association and the City Historical Science Association also agreed and approved this proposal. The name Vo Nguyen Giap Street was added to the city's street name fund by the City People's Council at the end of 2013.

Located at the eastern gateway of Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi Highway is 31km long, connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Bien Hoa City - Dong Nai. This route was built from 1957 to 1961, starting from Saigon Bridge, ending at the intersection of National Highway 1 at Cho Sat junction (Tan Bien Ward, Bien Hoa City).
