Speaking to students of the Diplomatic Academy, the President of Timor-Leste hopes that Vietnam can help Timor-Leste develop agriculture to ensure food security.
Within the framework of his State visit to Vietnam, on August 2, President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste Jose Ramos-Horta visited and interacted with students of the Diplomatic Academy.
In his opening remarks welcoming the President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet said that President Jose Ramos-Horta was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996, together with Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo.

Since then, Mr. Jose Ramos-Horta has continued to serve his country in various important positions - from Foreign Minister, Prime Minister and now President for his second term. His leadership has played a significant role in guiding Timor-Leste through the complex challenges of nation-building and towards regional integration.
According to Deputy Minister Do Hung Viet, Vietnam joined ASEAN in 1995 and will celebrate its 30th anniversary of joining the bloc next year. This milestone reflects a similar regional integration journey to Timor-Leste. Therefore, Vietnam supports Timor-Leste to become an official member of ASEAN.
Mr. Do Hung Viet expressed his belief that Timor-Leste's unique perspective and cultural heritage will be a valuable piece for ASEAN, further strengthening solidarity and cooperation within the bloc.
Speaking to students of the Diplomatic Academy, President Jose Ramos-Horta expressed his hope that Vietnam could help Timor-Leste develop its agriculture sector to ensure food security, reduce hunger and malnutrition among children. Vietnam could assist Timor-Leste in developing a master plan, proposing solutions and model examples, and working with people across Timor-Leste to positively change the face of agriculture.
Besides, if joining ASEAN, Timor-Leste hopes to attract more investment resources from member countries, especially Vietnam and Thailand, in the tourism sector.

Mr. Jose Ramos-Horta emphasized that the youth are the future of the country, so they need to continuously study, improve and update their knowledge about upcoming challenges. We need to find better technology to solve water security, as well as save water for agriculture.
The President of Timor-Leste sent a message to the youth to always remain humble, strive to become the pride of their family, their country and serve humanity.
Since Vietnam and Timor-Leste established diplomatic relations on July 28, 2002, the friendship and multifaceted cooperation between the two countries have made significant progress.
Vietnam and Timor-Leste have always maintained close relations and supported each other in the international arena, especially in the struggle for national liberation.
