Towards 30 years of establishing Vietnam - US diplomatic relations

General Secretary and President To Lam's working trip to the US also took place on the occasion of the first anniversary of the two countries upgrading their relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and actively preparing for activities to celebrate the 30th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations in 2025.

According to Mr. Bui Thanh Son, this is an important occasion for both sides to look back at the achievements brought about by the new relationship framework, and at the same time discuss major orientations and measures to continue maintaining the positive, stable and substantive development momentum of the relationship in the coming years.

The two sides will continue to adhere to the fundamental principles of bilateral relations, including "respect for the United Nations Charter, international law, and respect for each other's political institutions, independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity"; further consolidate political trust and strategic confidence, ensure the aspirations of the people of both sides, and make more positive contributions to peace, stability, cooperation, and sustainable development in the region as well as in the world.

During the working trip, General Secretary and President To Lam will have important bilateral meetings with US government leaders.

The Party and State leaders will also attend and speak at events to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Vietnam-US diplomatic relations and one year of upgrading relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership, as well as meetings and working sessions with the participation of leading US officials, businesses, experts and scholars.

After one year of implementing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, cooperation between Vietnam and the US has achieved many positive results in a number of areas, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son:

Firstly, contacts and delegation exchanges have been taking place actively at all channels and levels. In addition to maintaining existing annual dialogue mechanisms, the two sides have successfully launched new annual dialogue mechanisms such as the Foreign Ministers' Dialogue, Economic Dialogue, Security and Law Enforcement Dialogue.

Second, economy - trade - investment continues to be an important driving force for bilateral relations. Bilateral trade turnover in the first 8 months of 2024 reached nearly 88 billion USD, up 22%. Many large enterprises of the two countries are actively expanding investment in each other's markets, creating a strong intertwined interest.

Third, security and defense cooperation continues to be effectively implemented, in which cooperation in overcoming war consequences continues to be a priority and an important pillar in bilateral relations, achieving many substantive results; security and law enforcement cooperation is increasingly strengthened...

Fourth, the two sides continue to coordinate closely at important multilateral mechanisms and forums as well as substantive cooperation to respond to global issues.

Besides, on issues that still differ, the two sides will continue to strengthen dialogue in a frank and constructive spirit and pay attention to each other's legitimate interests.
