The incident occurred at the same time the US Supreme Court issued a ruling upholding a federal law that makes gun possession a crime for people on probation for domestic violence.
The ruling overturned a lower court’s decision to strike down the 1994 law because it violated the Second Amendment right to “keep and bear arms.” The law had been challenged by a Texas man who was placed under a gun-possession ban after assaulting his girlfriend and then threatening to shoot her.

Arkansas State Police Superintendent Mike Hagar told reporters the suspect was also wounded in the shootout with police, which took place at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce, a town of 3,200.
“Unfortunately, we can confirm that 11 innocent civilians were shot and three of them were killed. Two law enforcement officers were injured in the gunfire. The suspect was also shot and taken into custody,” Hagar said.
Mr. Hagar added that the injured officers and the suspect were expected to survive. He said some of the injuries were life-threatening, but did not explain the circumstances of the shooting.
