According to Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond, multiple attackers arrived in the Five Points South area, got out of their vehicles, started shooting, and then quickly fled the scene. No suspects have been arrested, and police are working with the FBI to investigate the incident. Initial reports indicate the gunmen may have used a device that converts their guns into machine guns.
Police found two men and a woman dead at the scene, while a fourth victim died at the University of Alabama Hospital. A total of more than 100 shell casings were collected at the scene.
Three of the four victims have been identified as Anitra Holloman (21 years old), Tahj Booker (27 years old) and Carlos McCain (27 years old), while the identity of the fourth victim has not been determined.
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin condemned gun violence in the city and called for stricter laws to prevent the use of conversion devices. He stressed that the violence has become “a crisis” and that policy changes at every level are needed to protect residents.
