Apple has just introduced two new features for AirPods Max headphones. Starting with the iOS 18.4 update, the device will support ultra-low latency and the ability to play high-quality audio (lossless) via USB-C cable.
“With the included USB-C cable, users can enjoy the highest quality audio when listening to music, watching movies, and playing games, while musicians can experience significant improvements in songwriting, beatmaking, production, and mixing,” Apple’s press release describes.
Specifically, AirPods Max will support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio when connected to the source via USB-C cable. According to Apple, this format helps preserve the quality of the original recording, providing a sound experience similar to the artist's studio.
The lossless format also applies to Personalized Spatial Audio. This mode simulates high-quality surround sound effects thanks to head tracking.
Additionally, AirPods Max will support ultra-low latency. According to Apple, this feature significantly reduces latency, providing an experience similar to listening through the speaker on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Low latency is mainly for streamers, gamers, and audio producers.
In the Logic Pro app, AirPods Max users can compose and mix music while applying Personalized Spatial Audio effects. Ultra-low latency allows artists to record and mix music smoothly while maintaining audio fidelity.

According to Apple, the new features for AirPods Max are expected to be released in April, via the iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, and macOS 15.4 updates. However, these improvements are only for the USB-C version of AirPods Max, which is an update in 2024.
First launched in December 2020, AirPods Max are over-ear headphones that support active noise cancellation, equipped with the H1 chip to sync seamlessly with Apple products.
AirPods Max were updated in September 2024, switching the charging port from Lightning to USB-C and losing the wired listening mode. Therefore, MacRumors commented that this is one of the major updates for AirPods Max using USB-C port.
Apple also launched a USB-C to 3.5mm cable on its official store and authorized dealers for VND 1.2 million. Users need to distinguish the USB-C to 3.5mm cable from the USB-C to 3.5mm adapter (priced at VND 300,000).
The cable allows AirPods Max to be connected to sources with a 3.5mm port, such as an in-flight entertainment system. Additionally, iPhone and iPad users can use the cable to connect to external speakers and car audio systems with a 3.5mm port.
