Finding directions for night-time economic development in Hoi An

In September 2024, Cam Chau Ward People's Committee opened a night food court at Cam Chau market. The night food court has 12 stalls, selling 8 food and beverage items; operating on weekdays, from 5:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. the next morning (winter) and from 6:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. the next morning (summer).

To organize the night food court, Cam Chau ward has established a management team to monitor business activities; require all households to comply with business hours, post prices and sell at listed prices, ensure traffic safety and order, food hygiene and safety, etc. The night food court at Cam Chau market has initially brought economic efficiency and created new tourism products in the locality.

In addition to the night food court at Cam Chau market, last year, the Provincial People's Committee approved a list of research projects for investment proposals in the province with a very promising project, which is the Night Economy Development Project in Tan Thanh block, Cam An ward. This project has a research area of ​​over ^3,700m2 .

The Provincial People's Committee assigned the People's Committee of Hoi An City to be responsible for guiding interested investors to propose waste treatment solutions that ensure compliance with legal regulations...

Mr. Nguyen Van Lanh - Vice Chairman of Hoi An City People's Committee said that the locality will continue to improve existing products, especially "Old Town Night" and choose some beautiful areas to organize.

For example, the An Hoi - Dong Hiep area must be changed according to the theme to avoid spontaneity. This year, Hoi An will invest in a number of relatively modern and convenient shopping and entertainment areas in the coastal area and night-time commercial centers.

In July 2023, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued a Project on a number of models for developing night tourism products, identifying Hoi An as one of 12 locations planned to promote night tourism to become a key product for developing the night-time economy in Vietnam.

In May 2024, the Provincial People's Committee issued an official dispatch assigning the People's Committee of Hoi An City and related departments and branches to coordinate in implementing a pilot project/model of night-time economy in the locality...

However, how to build and operate night-time economic models in Hoi An to suit the characteristics of an ecological, cultural and tourist city is a matter of concern.

“Hoi An has a lot of potential for night-time economy, but we have to be careful because we cannot follow the model of Da Nang or Nha Trang because they have their own characteristics.

We can learn from those cities about management and open-mindedness, but the operating model and form of operation must be different in Hoi An. The problem is that Hoi An cannot exploit it massively but must prioritize giving tourists the experience of the quiet space of Hoi An night, not the noisy, bustling night space" - Mr. Nguyen Van Lanh said.
