Finding ways to bring traditional art to audiences

Both professional and non-professional art units of the province and districts are operating in quite difficult conditions with limited investment funds, inadequate facilities, and a shortage of human resources. However, efforts are still being made to bring art in general and traditional art in particular to "water" the spiritual life of the people, contributing to preserving the unique cultural heritage of the nation.

INNOVATION TO KEEP AUDIENCES

Since the end of 2024, Cao Van Lau Theater - a meeting place for audiences in the province and tourists to enjoy art every weekend night - has been temporarily closed for repairs. The official reopening date has not been determined, but the Theater does not want to prolong the suspension of bringing traditional art to the public. Therefore, recently, the unit has built a "field" stage to attract audiences to enjoy.

Also every Saturday night, the program "Back to the Ancient Night" takes place in the open space in front of the Theater lobby and immediately attracts a large number of viewers. In addition to the older audience, recent performances have also unexpectedly welcomed young people of the Gen Z generation. With this good sign, in addition to the meticulous staging of the stage, the Theater has innovated the program content. Long excerpts of reformed opera are replaced by typical segments with many dramatic details. In addition, the Theater's program also has a harmonious adjustment between the reformed opera performances in the classical opera genre and social and revolutionary themes, so it is well received by many audiences because it is less boring. In particular, with the temporary closure, the Theater has increased performances serving remote areas so that traditional art can spread in the cultural life of the people.

Similarly, the Provincial Cultural Center also innovates the content of art programs to serve political tasks. In addition to songs with propaganda and agitational meanings, the unit also adds compositions with folk and traditional melodies combined with modernity. In addition, the Center also serves drama sketches with topics close to the audience such as: school violence, new rural construction, etc.

SUPPORTING THE ART OF SUBLIMATION

According to a singer who has worked for many years at the Provincial Cultural Center, the remuneration for singers, actors, musicians, and backstage staff participating in the performance program is still low. For singers, the remuneration for each rehearsal is 60,000 VND and for each performance is 80,000 VND. Singers who perform many songs or one song receive the same remuneration. Furthermore, programs serving important events are limited to a maximum of 10 rehearsals. However, many times, singers and actors of the Center have to practice beyond the above regulations to achieve the highest quality of the program.

Or with the Khmer Bac Lieu General Art Troupe, the lack of investment funds for productions, especially stage scripts, the lack of human resources, and seriously degraded equipment have been prolonged, making it extremely difficult to serve the audience. The troupe even had to hire collaborators and rent cars to serve at the grassroots level many times to maintain the preservation and dissemination of the nation's traditional art.

No matter how much managers, artists, and actors love their jobs and are devoted to their art, it is difficult for them to create high-quality works, especially in the context of traditional art being under great pressure from modern art forms. Therefore, adequate investment in human resources, material resources, and preferential policies is extremely important to help national art overcome difficulties and challenges to continue to flourish.
