These competitions are a place for students to demonstrate their English skills and an opportunity for them to practice communication skills, critical thinking and confidence. One of the typical competitions is the Provincial English Speaking Competition for the 2024-2025 school year. This year, the competition attracted the participation of 1,052 candidates from all levels of schools in the province. To reach the final round, the candidates had to go through a difficult preliminary round. The final round selected the 124 best candidates (44 primary school candidates, 44 secondary school candidates and 36 high school candidates). The form of speaking competition on the topic of drawing lots and answering questions from the judges has created a healthy competitive environment, motivating students to practice comprehensive English skills. Each candidate has 10 minutes to prepare and a maximum of 3 minutes (for primary school students) or 5 minutes (for secondary school and high school students) to present to the judges.
By participating in the contest, students have the opportunity to experience a positive learning environment, where they can challenge themselves and make every effort to achieve the best results. Speaking and answering questions in front of a crowd helps students become more confident in communicating in English, practicing critical thinking and improvisation. Diverse speaking topics help students expand their knowledge in many different fields. In particular, participating and achieving results in the contest helps students gain confidence in their English ability, motivating them to continue learning and developing.
Thao Vy (Chau Van Liem High School, Cho Moi District) won third prize at the Provincial English Speaking Contest for the 2024-2025 school year and said: “The contest is a great opportunity for me to challenge myself and practice my presentation skills. During the preparation process for the contest, I also learned how to think critically and answer questions quickly. Through that, I have more motivation to learn English better. I also have the opportunity to interact and learn from other excellent students.”
According to Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training Tran Tuan Khanh, the English Speaking Contest is a playground for students and an opportunity for teachers to exchange and share experiences in teaching and learning English. Observing and evaluating the contests helps teachers improve their professional qualifications and teaching skills, and find and apply more effective English teaching methods. The results of the contest are also a measure of the quality of English teaching and learning in schools, helping teachers have an overview of the situation and make appropriate adjustments.
According to the contest judges, the progress of the contestants in this year's contest compared to previous years is the ability to pronounce English, phonetics and intonation have improved. Many students demonstrated good speaking, listening and observation skills through the excellent answers on other topics of the judges. It can be said that English is considered the "key" to access knowledge and knowledge of world civilization. Therefore, understanding and using English fluently helps students easily access knowledge and diverse sources of information.
The English speaking and presentation contest is a useful and effective playground, contributing to improving the quality of English teaching and learning. To maximize the effectiveness of the contest, there needs to be close coordination between schools, teachers, students and the community. It is necessary to increase the organization of English contests at different levels, creating conditions for students to have more opportunities to demonstrate their abilities. At the same time, it is necessary to diversify the forms of the contest, not only stopping at speaking but also organizing writing, listening, reading contests... to comprehensively assess students' English ability.
