Tien Giang: Pork prices decrease, purchasing power remains slow

In recent days, the price of live pigs in Tien Giang province has gradually "cooled down", leading to a decrease in the price of pork in the markets. Although the price of pork has decreased, consumption is still slow. A decrease of about 1 million VND/quintal

According to records, after reaching a peak price of 8.3 - 8.5 million VND/quintal about 1 month ago, in recent days, the price of live pigs in the province has decreased quite sharply.

Recorded in Cho Gao district, at this time, the price of live pigs is fluctuating between 7.4 - 7.5 million VND/quintal, down about 1 million VND/quintal compared to 1 month ago.

According to an official of the People's Committee of Xuan Dong Commune, Cho Gao District, the commune currently has a herd of several tens of thousands of pigs, mainly concentrated in large farms. In recent days, although the price of live pigs in the area has decreased, farmers still make a profit.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tam's family (Binh Tan commune, Go Cong Tay district) raises more than 30 pigs of various types. According to Mr. Tam, last month, his family sold 5 pigs for 8.3 million VND/quintal. However, in the past 10 days, the price of live pigs has started to decrease, currently at about 7.3 million VND/quintal.

Mr. Tam shared: “At this price level, pig farmers still make a profit, but not as much as before, the profit is nearly 2 million VND/quintal. The current difficulty is that the price of piglets is too high. If farmers re-herd now, there will be many risks in terms of price and disease.”

Ms. Binh's pork stall only sells about 40 - 50 kg of various types of meat every day.

Meanwhile, in Tan Phu Dong district, the price of live pigs has also dropped quite sharply. Mr. Duong Tan Si's family (Tan Thoi commune, Tan Phu Dong district) is currently raising more than 300 pigs of various types. According to Mr. Si, the price of live pigs in the locality has dropped to about 7.3 million VND/quintal.

“A month ago, my family sold 115 pigs for 8.35 million VND/quintal. If the pigs were not infected with disease, a price of 6 million VND/quintal would be the dream of farmers. Therefore, if the price of live pigs is 7.3 million VND/quintal, farmers would still make a profit of more than 2 million VND/pig.

Although the price of live pigs remains high, farmers are still hesitant to restock due to concerns about disease. The disease is not like before. Previously, the peak of the disease was in September and October, but now the disease still occurs during the dry season. Raising pigs is very precarious now," Mr. Si shared.

PURCHASING POWER AT THE MARKET IS STILL LOW

The decrease in live hog prices has caused retail pork prices in markets to decrease. It has been noted that in some traditional markets, pork prices have decreased in recent days compared to about half a month ago.

Recorded at Old Market (Ward 2, My Tho City), the selling price of pork has decreased by an average of about 10,000 VND/kg compared to half a month ago.

Ms. Tran Thi Huyen Trang (Ward 2, My Tho City) said that before, she bought pork belly at the Old Market for 155,000 VND/kg, now it has decreased to 140,000 VND/kg. The price of meat has decreased, housewives are happy; because it will reduce part of the cost of daily meals.

Although pork prices have decreased, consumption is still slow. This is a common situation that many pork traders are facing. Ms. Y Binh, a pork trader at Thanh Tri market, Ward 4, My Tho city, said that after the price of live pigs decreased, the retail price of pork decreased by an average of about 10,000 VND/kg (depending on the type of meat).

Specifically, pork belly costs from 130,000 - 140,000 VND/kg, thigh meat costs 100,000 VND/kg (reduced from 15,000 - 20,000 VND/kg), pork ribs cost 180,000 VND/kg (reduced by 20,000 VND/kg).

“Although the price has dropped a lot, purchasing power has not improved. On average, I sell about 40-50 kg of various types of meat per day. The market is very deserted. Maybe the reason is that people do not know about the decrease in pork prices,” Ms. Binh added.

Unlike traditional markets, retail pork prices at some stores and supermarkets remain high. Specifically, according to records at a Bach Hoa Xanh store (Ward 2, My Tho City) on the morning of April 6, the selling price of all types of pork remains the same as a month ago.

Specifically, CP pork leg meat costs 126,000 VND/kg, pork belly 176,000 VND/kg, baby back ribs 196,000 VND/kg. In addition, imported pork also accounts for a large amount here such as: Brazilian baby back ribs 149,000 VND/kg, German ham 59,000 VND/kg... and has a relatively low price compared to meat from domestic sources.

According to livestock farmers in Tien Giang province, the shortage of domestic pork supply was the reason for the sharp increase in pork prices. After many days of sharp increase in pork prices, in order to stabilize the domestic market price situation, the Government has allowed the import of frozen pork in large quantities. This is the reason for the sharp decrease in pork prices in the province in recent days. It is forecasted that in the coming days, the price of live pigs will continue to decrease.
