The peak tourist season has arrived in China’s tourism market, especially during the Chinese people’s overseas trips when the summer holidays begin. Major online travel agencies (OTAs) are seeing an increase in bookings, creating positive signs for the country’s tourism industry.

Searches for domestic hotels and flights have increased more than 20% year-on-year, according to a report from Ctrip, one of China’s leading online travel agencies. Home-sharing platform Xiaozhu also said summer bookings in popular cities have tripled compared to 2023.

According to Ctrip, more than 70% of summer tour bookings were long-distance trips. In addition to traditional destinations, Northeast China saw a 40% year-on-year increase, while Southwest China saw a 25% increase. Data from Tuniu.com shows that in July, more than 50% of all trips were domestic long-distance trips. Meanwhile, Xiaozhu also reported that cross-province tours accounted for 71% of total bookings.

Not only domestic, overseas tours are also expected to increase sharply this summer. The number of international flight bookings on Qunar.com has increased by 150% compared to the same period last year, indicating strong demand for overseas travel during this year's summer vacation. Qunar.com estimates that this demand will return to the remarkable level of 2019.

Visa-free policies for some popular tourist destinations in Asia for Chinese tourists have contributed significantly to this growth. Data from Qunar.com shows that 9 out of 10 international destinations booked for air travel are in Asia, highlighting the increased demand for “Asian travel”. Average international airfares and hotel prices have dropped by at least 20% compared to the same period last year.

According to Zhu Keli, director of the China New Economic Research Institute, the booming Chinese summer tourism market not only demonstrates the huge potential and growth opportunities of the domestic tourism industry, but also reflects the economic vitality and changes in people's travel habits. In recent years, Chinese people's income has increased and their awareness of leisure and travel has also improved.
