Elon Musk's startup xAI will soon introduce its artificial intelligence (AI) model to a limited group of users. This announcement continues to "heat up" the AI race since OpenAI's ChatGPT caused a global stir in late 2022, leading to the need to apply generative AI technology.
Billionaire Elon Musk co-founded OpenAI, the company that developed ChatGPT, in 2015 but left the company's board of directors three years later.
xAI was born to understand the “natural laws of the universe”
"In some ways, xAI's AI is the best yet," Elon Musk said in a post on X. "In early beta, xAI's Grok AI will be available to X Premium+ subscribers," the Tesla CEO continued.
X, formerly known as Twitter, introduced two new subscription plans last week. Premium+ costs $16 per month and does not show ads on the platform, while the standard paid plan costs $3 per month.
Elon Musk has publicly criticized the AI race efforts of Big Tech (the world's leading technology companies). He called on AI labs to temporarily stop developing tools and artificial intelligence models smarter than ChatGPT because of concerns about negative impacts on human society. But this billionaire also announced that he would develop AI that can understand the nature of the universe to compete with artificial intelligences like Google Bard and Microsoft Bing AI.
According to Reuters, xAI began operating in July 2023, with a team of engineers from Google's DeepMind, Microsoft and many of the world's leading companies in AI research today. Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle and self-proclaimed close friend of Musk, said last September that xAI signed a contract to use cloud services provided by Oracle to train AI models.
xAI and X (formerly Twitter) are independent but still closely linked. xAI itself also partners with Tesla, a company founded and run by Elon Musk, and many other companies.
