Mr. Huynh Han, a dragon fruit trader in Ham Thuan Nam district, said that dragon fruit has many prices at this time, depending on the type. Seasonal white-fleshed dragon fruit (dragon fruit that grows naturally in the weather) has a purchase price of about 12,000 VND/kg, electric-powered dragon fruit (off-season dragon fruit, stimulated to produce fruit by using electric lights) has a slightly higher price of 15,000 VND/kg, and red-fleshed dragon fruit is about 17,000 VND/kg.
However, at this time, red-fleshed dragon fruit is "out of season", it will take about 5 more days for red-fleshed dragon fruit to ripen and be in high supply.
According to farmers, in recent years, seasonal dragon fruit has produced less fruit due to erratic weather and excessive off-season harvesting.
According to records, along the road leading to Phan Thiet – Dau Giay highway, there are many stalls selling dragon fruit to tourists. The stall owners also bought dragon fruit from gardens to sell for profit.
However, white-fleshed dragon fruit is abundant, red-fleshed dragon fruit is scarce, if available, it is old dragon fruit, harvested a long time ago and stored for sale at this time, so the fruit is not beautiful. There are also gardens that harvest red dragon fruit out of season to sell, but the price is as high as 25,000 VND/kg.
Dragon fruit plays an important role in the development of the agricultural and rural economy of Binh Thuan province. According to the latest data from the Binh Thuan Provincial Statistics Office, by July 2024, the area of dragon fruit trees in the whole Binh Thuan province was 26,550 hectares, with an output of 325,000 tons/year.
In the first months of 2024, domestic and export demand for fruit was high, dragon fruit prices were stable, and at times increased, so growers made a profit.
