Chia seeds are rich in fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, protein and antioxidants, according to the health site HealthShots (India).
The nutrients in chia seeds may help improve heart health, support strong bones, and improve blood sugar control, according to Food Science and Technology .
However, Ms. Avni Kaul, a nutritionist working in India, said you should avoid combining chia seeds with certain foods because they can affect digestion, nutrient absorption or cause discomfort.
Foods rich in phytic acid
Phytic acid, found in foods such as beans, lentils, nuts, and some grains, can interfere with mineral absorption.
Chia seeds are already high in phytic acid, so combining them with other foods high in phytic acid can reduce the absorption of essential minerals like calcium, iron, and zinc. This can lead to mineral deficiencies in people who are primarily vegetarian or vegan.
Foods rich in fiber
Chia seeds contain quite a lot of fiber. According to Food Science magazine, every 28 grams of chia seeds provide up to 10 grams of fiber, accounting for up to 35% of the seed weight.
Combining chia seeds with other high-fiber foods like oats and certain fruits like apples and pears can overload the digestive system.
Dairy products
Combining chia seeds and milk may cause some digestive issues for those who are lactose intolerant.
When chia seeds are combined with milk, the fiber in chia seeds absorbs large amounts of water, forming a gel. This gel, combined with the lactose in milk, can slow down digestion and cause unpleasant symptoms such as gas, bloating, and abdominal pain.
Foods rich in oxalates
Oxalates are found in spinach, beets, and sweet potatoes. When they enter the body, they can combine with calcium to form small crystals. If too many of these crystals accumulate in the kidneys, they can cause kidney stones.
Chia seeds are also relatively high in oxalates, so combining them with other oxalate-rich foods can be dangerous for people prone to kidney stones.
Sweets
Combining chia seeds with sweets, such as desserts, sugary drinks or breakfast cereals, may reduce the health benefits of chia seeds.
Sweets contain a lot of sugar, when eaten, it will cause blood sugar to increase rapidly. Although chia seeds can help regulate blood sugar, when exposed to a large amount of sugar from sweets, this effect will be overwhelmed.
