After drawing two standard chess games, Le Quang Liem (elo 2,740) and former world champion Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukraine, elo 2,664) had to settle things in a play-off series at the 2023 Chess World Cup.

In the first game of the rapid chess play-off (25 minutes plus 10 seconds for each move), Le Quang Liem held the black pieces (going last), and won a draw against Ruslan Ponomariov after 52 moves.

In the next game, the two players continued to shake hands and draw as the match came to an end.

With this result, Le Quang Liem and former world champion Ruslan Ponomariov must continue playing two rapid chess games with a time limit of 10 minutes plus 10 seconds for each move.

In the first game, Quang Liem had the advantage of holding the white pieces (going first) but unfortunately lost to his opponent after 57 moves.

With the disadvantage of holding the black pieces in the second game, Quang Liem took the initiative to attack, but still accepted a draw after 60 moves, eventually losing to Ruslan Ponomariov in the play-off series.

Stopping in the third round of the 2023 Chess World Cup, Le Quang Liem received a prize of 10,000 USD.

He failed to surpass his career best of reaching the fourth round.

Le Quang Liem is the only representative of Vietnamese chess still competing in the 2023 Chess World Cup.

Previously, Le Tuan Minh, Vo Thi Kim Phung and Nguyen Thi Mai Hung all stopped in the first round. Mai Hung lost after two standard games. Tuan Minh and Kim Phung took their opponents to the play-off but both failed.

The 2023 Chess World Cup will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from July 30 to August 24, with 206 players in the open division and 103 players in the women's division.

The players compete in a knockout match, with the top three players from each group qualifying for the Candidates. The total prize money for the tournament is up to 2.5 million USD.
