On the afternoon of July 19, at the Government headquarters, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received Malaysian Foreign Minister, Senator Zambry Abdul Kadir, on the occasion of the Minister's official visit to Vietnam and co-chairing the 7th meeting of the Joint Committee on Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation (JCST) from July 19-20.
At the reception, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh welcomed the Malaysian Foreign Minister's visit to Vietnam and co-chaired the bilateral meeting of the Joint Commission with the Vietnamese Foreign Minister; contributing to reviewing the implementation of cooperation agreements between the two countries and preparing well for the official visit to Vietnam by the Malaysian Prime Minister and his wife from July 20-21, a visit of great significance in the context of 2023, when Vietnam and Malaysia celebrate the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations.
The Malaysian Foreign Minister expressed his pleasure to visit Vietnam and sincerely thanked Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh for taking the time to receive the delegation; expressed his deep impression and congratulated Vietnam on its outstanding socio-economic development achievements after the pandemic; affirmed that Malaysia always attaches importance to and wishes to further promote multi-faceted cooperation with Vietnam - Malaysia's only strategic partner in ASEAN.
The two sides expressed satisfaction with the positive results of cooperation between the two countries; increasingly close and trustworthy political relations; cooperation in various fields has achieved many achievements, especially in economic, trade and investment cooperation. Malaysia is Vietnam's second largest trading partner in ASEAN and ninth in the world; bilateral turnover reached more than 14.8 billion USD in 2022, an increase of 17.9% compared to 2021. Malaysia is also among the top 10 countries with the largest investment in Vietnam with 718 valid projects with a total registered capital of 13 billion USD.
The Prime Minister suggested that the two sides continue to effectively implement cooperation areas in the Action Program to implement the Strategic Partnership for the 2021-2025 period; promote contacts and exchanges of high-level delegations; coordinate well in organizing activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations; soon bring bilateral trade turnover to 18 billion USD in a more balanced direction (for Vietnam); and affirmed that Vietnam will create favorable conditions for Malaysian businesses to continue expanding investment and trade with Vietnam.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh stressed that the two sides should focus on promoting cooperation in other important areas such as defense, security, maritime cooperation, education and training, science and technology, labor, culture, sports, tourism and people-to-people exchange; expand cooperation in new areas such as digital economy, circular economy, green energy; at the same time, he asked Malaysia to support Vietnam in building capacity and developing the Halal industry; and asked Malaysia to acknowledge Vietnam's efforts in combating IUU fishing and support the removal of the EU's yellow card for Vietnam's seafood industry.

Agreeing with the Prime Minister's assessment of the potential for cooperation between the two countries as well as the development direction to bring the relationship to a new height in the coming time, the Malaysian Foreign Minister pledged at the Vietnam-Malaysia Joint Committee meeting on July 20 to work with the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant agencies of the two countries to review and advise on directions for the effective implementation of high-level agreements between the two countries.
Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir emphasized that the official visit to Vietnam by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will contribute to deepening and substantively enhancing the strategic partnership between the two countries.
The Malaysian Foreign Minister also agreed that the two countries need to continue to coordinate closely at international and regional forums, maintain solidarity and the central role of ASEAN, and contribute to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.
