The US has begun a comprehensive modernization of the Pituffik space base in Greenland and Russia will consider new challenges to its security in its military planning, Russian Ambassador to Denmark Vladimir Barbin said recently.

"A comprehensive modernization of the US Pituffik air base is underway, and airfield infrastructure for P-35 fighters capable of carrying nuclear weapons and high-precision weapons is being created there. Russia will take into account the latest security challenges in its military planning, including the possibility of implementing additional military-technical response measures," the Russian diplomat explained to TASS news agency.
Previously, US President Donald Trump declared that Greenland - an autonomous territory of Denmark, must become part of the US, citing national security reasons and protection from threats from China and Russia.
On January 30, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also affirmed that President Trump's interest in acquiring Greenland was "no joke" and emphasized that acquiring this territory was in the national interest of the US.
In an interview on Sirius XM ’s “The Megyn Kelly Show,” Rubio reiterated that President Trump wants to buy Greenland and did not rule out military coercion to gain the autonomous territory to gain a negotiating advantage. “This is not a joke,” Rubio stressed, “This is in the national interest of the United States and needs to be addressed.”
In the interview, Mr. Rubio also said that the Arctic will become important for shipping routes and the US needs to be able to protect this area. The US Secretary of State also warned that China may seek to increase its presence in this area.
Asked whether the United States could own Greenland in the next four years, Rubio said that this was a priority for President Trump, but that the United States was not in a position to discuss exactly how it would proceed tactically. However, in four years, Washington’s interests in the Arctic would be more secure.
On this issue, the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas affirmed on January 27 that the bloc "is not negotiating" about Greenland. Speaking to the press after the EU Foreign Ministers' meeting, Ms. Kallas emphasized that the bloc is not negotiating about Greenland and expressed support for the EU member state Denmark and its autonomous region of Greenland.
Ms Kallas also noted that it is not advisable to speculate on assumptions as this is not the current situation.
Greenland and Denmark have both publicly stated that the Arctic island is not for sale. Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede has also stressed that Greenlanders should decide their own future.
