Having failed the entrance exams to three specialized schools in a row (Natural Science, Hanoi - Amsterdam and Hanoi Pedagogical University), Duc Anh was admitted to a top public school in Hanoi but his academic performance was only average, so he was very self-conscious.

New doctor Tran Le Duc Anh received his medical degree from the school representative.

The valedictorian once had the lowest results in class.

The valedictorian of the medical school shared: “In grades 10 and 11, there was a semester when the whole class was an excellent student, and I was the only one who was classified as an advanced student. I understand my parents’ concerns, but they always encouraged me and rarely blamed me or put pressure on me about my grades.”

In 2018, when he placed his first choice at the University of Medicine, Duc Anh said he scored 24.9 points in the B00 block, just 0.15 points short of being admitted to the Medical major. This also made the male student feel self-conscious when most of his classmates came from specialized schools across the country, were students with many achievements and won many awards.

If you are lazy to read, you will not be able to keep up with medical school. Afraid that he would be “left behind” and not be able to keep up with his friends, Duc Anh tried very hard to study when he entered school. Overcoming himself, in the first semester, Duc Anh won the school’s “Scholarship for Academic Encouragement”. Thanks to that, the male student realized that even though his friends were more excellent, when entering the medical field, everyone had the same starting point and had to try and make the same effort.

"Winning the scholarship made me dare to believe that I was a good student, from there I acted, thought and tried to be like the good student in my imagination" - Duc Anh said.

This was the turning point, the motivation for the 2x male student to change his thinking, actions and efforts and become the valedictorian of the medical field - the field of study that trains general practitioners, after 6 years of study.

For Duc Anh, the highest score does not mean that he is the best, but only that he is luckier in exams. Sharing the key to getting high scores before each exam, according to Duc Anh, there is no need to study all night long, study day and night, but it is necessary to have study discipline and always proactively synthesize knowledge.

According to new doctor Duc Anh, the biggest difficulty for medical students is the amount of knowledge, so the way to take notes and retain knowledge is very important. In addition, Duc Anh's secret is "to ask a lot of questions", Duc Anh believes that clinical learning is the way to study well and pass each exam with high scores.

“I always cherish every clinical lesson because I believe that in addition to knowledge, future doctors are also inspired by teachers at the hospital. When interacting with patients, we feel that we need to learn more so that we can save them in the future,” Duc Anh shared.

Not only does he focus on listening to lectures in class, the male student also reads English documents, borrows books from seniors, and then synthesizes knowledge by outlining main ideas and important keywords to remember. This is also a skill that this male student always tells himself to try to perfect.

After gradually getting used to the university environment, Duc Anh believes that personal interests as well as having close friends are an indispensable part of student life in general and studying in particular.

The male student joins the English club and spends a lot of time on personal hobbies such as listening to live music, playing sports or sitting at the school gate drinking tea and chatting with friends... Last year, Duc Anh passed the IELTS 8.0 English certificate.

Dream of becoming a cancer resident

This new doctor shared that studying medicine is a lifelong study. Although the time to study medicine is much longer than studying other majors, 6 years of studying medicine is probably the most leisurely time compared to studying at higher levels or working in a hospital.

New medical doctor is waiting for the results of the residency exam at Hanoi Medical University.

“Although I know the road ahead is still full of hardships, my brother, who has gone before me, has given me confidence, helped me dare to pursue medicine, dare to accept hardships and always be proud of my choice,” Duc Anh said.

After graduating as valedictorian from Hanoi Medical University, Duc Anh continued to focus on studying for the residency exam in early August.

The "output" valedictorian shared his wish to become a resident physician specializing in oncology because during his studies, Duc Anh felt the hardships and difficulties of patients as well as was inspired a lot by teachers and family guidance.

Furthermore, nowadays the rate of cancer is increasing, the rate of early detection is still low, so this new doctor only hopes that he can contribute to raising public awareness about early detection screening when there are still many treatment opportunities, improving treatment effectiveness and reducing the burden, improving the quality of life for cancer patients.
