Ky Son builds 2 rigid bridges across Nam Mo River, replacing degraded suspension bridges

After many years of serving the travel needs, the two suspension bridges Xop Nhi - Huu Lap and Xieng Thu, Chieu Luu commune, Ky Son district, across Nam Mo river have seriously degraded. Faced with this situation, the State has decided to invest in building new reinforced concrete bridges to replace the old suspension bridges.

Xop Nhi suspension bridge in Huu Lap commune was put into use in 1984. After a long time of use and especially after the heavy impact of storm No. 4 in 2018, the bridge was severely damaged.

It is clear that the northern bridge abutment is severely eroded despite temporary repairs. The cable system is tilted, the towers are corroded and rusted, and many places are at risk of collapsing. The bridge deck is narrow, only wide enough for motorbikes and light trucks under 1 ton to pass.

Faced with that situation, since 2024, Ky Son district has started construction of the Xop Nhi rigid bridge across the Nam Mo river. The project is invested by the district People's Committee, with a total investment of more than 43.9 billion VND. The bridge is solidly designed with reinforced concrete, 146.35m long and 7.0m wide. The two ends of the bridge are built according to the standards of grade V mountainous roads, with a 6.5m wide roadbed, a 3.5m asphalt road surface and each side reinforced with a width of 1.0m.

To date, the project has completed about 45% of the contract volume, including completion of 19/24 bored piles, 1/2 abutment base, abutment body; 2/3 pier base, bridge pier body; 2/4 bridge spans.

It is expected that Xop Nhi bridge will be completed and put into use by the end of 2025.

When put into operation, the bridge will ensure safe traffic during the rainy season, while promoting socio-economic development for communes in the northern part of Ky Son district such as Huu Lap, Huu Kiem, Bao Nam, and Bao Thang.

In parallel, Ky Son district is also implementing the construction of Xieng Thu bridge in Chieu Luu commune across Nam Mo river, with a total investment of more than 48 billion VND. The project has now completed about 40% of the volume, expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Xieng Thu bridge plays a vital role as a traffic artery, connecting National Highway 7A with Bao Thang commune, Ky Son district and some villages of Luong Minh commune, Tuong Duong district.

However, the construction of these two bridges is facing many difficulties, especially in the upcoming flood season. The water level of the Nam Mo River often rises, greatly affecting the construction progress and preventing many items from being implemented as planned.

After completing the two new bridges, Ky Son district will have three rigid bridges across the Nam Mo River, including Muong Xen town bridge, Xop Nhi bridge and Xieng Thu bridge, replacing the degraded suspension bridge. These projects will ensure traffic safety, especially during the rainy and stormy season, while creating favorable conditions for local socio-economic development, contributing to improving the lives of people in remote areas of Ky Son district.
