The growing trend of consuming more “green products” worldwide is adding to this prospect, Poonpong Naiyanapaporn, director of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) of the Thai Ministry of Commerce and a ministry spokesman, told reporters. The global organic rice market is expected to reach $12 billion by 2034, up from $7.8 billion last year.
Mr. Poonpong said that Thailand’s overseas organic rice shipments will reach more than 22,300 tons in 2024, worth $31.1 million. He said there will still be many markets that welcome Thailand’s eco-friendly grains, but with less competition than other markets.
He pointed out that locally harvested organic rice exports in general will increase by 32% by 2024, but will increase by 72.1% in particular for fragrant or Hom Mali rice varieties, followed by 23.1%, 3.3% and 1.5% for brown, white and broken grains, respectively.
The ministry spokesperson suggested that local farmers should develop and introduce their own unique “Brand Story” to promote and boost domestic sales and export of Thai organic grains abroad.
According to the TPSO Director, domestic agricultural land and locally produced green crops and grains have been approved according to internationally recognized standards, namely Organic Thailand, IFOAM, EU Organic, JAS Organic and even USDA Organic.
